Letter From The Front Describes Fierce Idaho Battle
Henry Horton of the First Idaho Regiment writes from Manta February 14 1899 to his mother and sister in Challis. He recounts a fierce clash where eight to one odds pressed them and forty five were killed while thirty five wounded. Major McConville fell and was brevetted brigadier general before death. Idaho troops captured two Krupp guns and earned praise from General Anderson and General King who called them savages from hell. Horton narrowly avoided the fight on the fifth after disobeying orders to stay in the depot and later hauled rations under fire all night. He ends with notices of comrades Holmes Burke Haller and a Washington soldier killed nearby and says he will send Manila papers.
