Admiral Evans announces a bold plan to encircle the globe by wireless communication as warships prepare for a big welcome in Rio de Janeiro. Officials signal intensified naval operations and public interest in the unprecedented voyage.
Rear Admiral Evans reports to the navy department the arrival of the battleship fleet at Trinidad yesterday. The news notes the transfer of ships to active service in the Pacific theater.
Secretary of the Navy Metcalf says no decision yet on returning the battleship fleet. Admiral Evans told AP he personally believes a Suez route next summer or fall is likely, but officials stress no definite move has been made. Discussion centers on whether a Pacific squadron should be reinforced and routed via the Horn or Suez, with final action due to six month developments.

Wallace Idaho faced a Sunday service shutdown after local authorities applied the Idaho Sunday rest law. Rocky Mountain Bell exchange in Wallace opened to operations. local manager F C Lewis was arrested, pleaded not guilty, but convicted and fined 25 dollars. General Manager D S Murray said the company seeks to learn Wallace’s stance on the Sunday law and will obey if required.
Boise December 24 The state rested its case after testimony from Colorado Justice W H Galhbert who described an attempted bombing on his life. Judge Wood ruled that corroborative evidence does not reach the standard to convict of Steunenberg’s killing and that conspiracy cannot be proven by accomplice corroboration.
Washington December 24 The President received and accepted the resignation of Rear Admiral Willard H Johnson as chief of the bureau of navigation. The resignation takes effect immediately and Captain Cameron M Winslow is appointed to succeed the admiral. No reason is given.
The Pocatello city council, with all members present except two Aldermen, approved a Sunday closing ordinance at a special meeting. It mirrors state law, tasks police and peace officers with enforcement, but omits a misdemeanor clause on city officials failing to enforce. A $55 street-work bill by Joseph Hawkes was approved. The administration aims to tighten government control.
In Denver, Judge R K Lewis quashed indictments charging E M Riggs and directors of New Mexico Lumber and others from Durango with conspiring to defraud timber lands in Archuleta county Colorado. He ruled no federal crime was shown and also quashed indictments against A T Sullenberger of Pagosa Lumber and associates.
Washington December 24 Mrs Longworth has recovered from an appendicitis operation begun December 11. She will depart the White House on Thursday to return to her own residence.
Chicago reports Adam Ortseifen, president of a brewing company, warns a thousand saloons may close by May 1 due to barley scarcity crippling large breweries. He predicts beer prices will advance in a few weeks as profits dry up and many small saloons struggle financially.
The Montpelier Examiner reports a wave of grisly incidents in Green River over two weeks. Three dead babies found, one believed murdered old man, a man killed on the grade at Fish Cut, and a fireman slain in the yards.
New Orleans reports five men killed in Louisiana and Mississippi during the last twenty four hours as Christmas violence erupts. Victims include three negroes and two whites with disputes tied to love affairs and money matters.
Tra Call of Bancroft arrives in Pocatello for a business mission. He meets local merchants and discusses trade opportunities and potential shipments.
A Typographical Union event at McNichols and Wright hall tonight will feature a live small press on the dancing floor producing periodical editions of The Hell Box the union official publication. Memphis reports the Memphis Savings Bank failed to open and E. B. McHenry was named receiver. President C. W. McCrea and cashier E. L. Manager head the bank with deposits over 1.5 million dollars. A. P. Read of the Memphis Clearing House said the suspension will not impact other institutions and all depositors will be paid in full.
Dec 24 report from Jacobs Creek Pa states rescuers at Darr mine found 74 bodies in a heap at entry No 27, raising the total recovered to 120. Emergency crews continue to search the mine as authorities confirm the disaster toll.
More than 120000 people in New York will receive Christmas dinners in baskets for families of five. Each basket includes five pounds of chicken vegetables coffee tea milk bread and plum puddings as part of Salvation Army efforts.
Roanoke Virginia Dee 24 reports Mrs. William Luck gifted her husband with two boys and two girls today for a Christmas present. All newborns are doing well.
Gus Wallin from Pocatello now in Kansas City leads a surge of 14 new Mergenthaler linotype improvements plus an addressing machine in development. The Wallin Addressing Machine & Manufacturing Co. formed as a $500,000 corporation, led by M. D. Good of St. Joe, Mo., promotes Wallin’s patents and market push.
St. Paul reports banks in St. Paul and Minneapolis are now virtually operating on a cash basis as of December 24, signaling a major change in daily financial practice and liquidity for customers and institutions.
The past week brings 20 degrees below zero in McCammon. Cattle remain in good shape but stockmen report little damage. Mrs. Chas Edwards dies after giving birth to a daughter who does not survive. she will be buried beside Grace, who died earlier. Edward Gittins, formerly of McCammon and now in Wheatland, is killed by a train, leaving a family trail of Gittins relatives. Burial plans point to McCammon for the fallen son.
Pittsburg reports a likely flood by Christmas morning as heavy rains and melting snow push the Allegheny River toward twenty-two feet or higher. The forecast comes from the local weather bureau amid rising river levels and concerns for nearby towns.

Frank Merrifield and Augusta Kohl were married last Saturday at the bride’s parents home 532 North Hayes avenue. Rev. Hunt officiated. The couple left for Los Angeles to honeymoon and will be home January 10 at the Kohl residence. Merrifield is an extra engineer on the Short Line from Pocatello. The bride is noted as a charming Pocatello daughter.

Idaho varsity beat Lewiston 39 to 17 in December with Middleton marrying in Spokane December 18. New railway engineering instructor F A Rapp joins state university. University aims to train workers for regional railway development and schedules Spokane meet January 10 plus a modern Western life play by the English club and a January 7 return of new students after holiday vacation.
Mrs. W. J. Secor, wife of the foreman of the Mail office, is here to join her husband. They will live in a neat cottage on North Third avenue.
