Sampel Gom pers, president of the American Federation of Labor, calls on organized labor to adopt resolutions demanding that their congressional representatives vote for labor bills. He pledges to exert strongest political and industrial activity to support candidates who protect workers’ interests.
The Democratic state convention met in Trenton today and nominated an uninstructed delegation to represent New Jersey at the national convention.
Thousands of worshippers pack St Patrick s cathedral for a centennial service led by Cardinal Gibbons and Cardinal Logue. Archbishops Ireland Glennon Keane OConnell Blenk Ryan Quigley Farley attend. Pope Pius X message read. Roosevelt and others send congratulations. Pontifical vespers planned tonight.
The British torpedo boat destroyer Gala was cut in two and sunk early today off Kentish Knock in the North Sea after a collision with the scout ship Attentive. Engineer Lieutenant Frank A. Fletcher perished. two crewmembers aboard Ribble were rescued after taking on water. A boiler explosion injured several aboard the battleship Britannia in Portsmouth.
Ferrell's department store in Idaho Falls suffered a major fire early yesterday. Loss estimated at 35,000 with 18,444 covered by insurance. Fire department saved neighboring structures and intends repairs. Cause under investigation.
Fire crews responded to an alarm from the Dodge building and found the blaze in Ferrell's basement. Water flooded the stock, ruining goods stored there, with losses estimated at 30 000 to 35 000 dollars. Insurance on the stock stood at 18 000 dollars. The fire spread from the basement to the storeroom before smoke cleared. In the same report, the Stinger fleet news from San Diego notes the Atlantic torpedo boat flotilla arriving for five days of target practice.
Washington lawmakers vote to locate an assistant treasurer of the United States in Seattle, with the bill gaining passage in the senate on April 28.
Potatello women met at the Methodist Church and formed a local branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Mrs Lula Shepherd of Salt Lake presided. Officers include President Mrs William A McHan and several vice presidents from local churches. Meetings set for the first Monday each month. Next meeting March 3 at Mrs J C Weeter’s home with a Mothers’ meeting program.
The Twilight Baseball League begins at East Side Grounds with Mayor Loux pitching the opening ball for a game between the Academy of Idaho and the Y M C A. Four teams compete, schedules set through June, admission 15 cents plus 10 cents grand stand.
Portneuf Lodge No. 18 Masons N D Brookheart and Ed L Holzheimer returned Sunday noon from a coast tour with the traveling Masonic silver trowel. They presented the trowel to Wilamette lodge in Portland before 2000 Oregon Masons.
New York on April 28 reports Selig Silverstin the anarchist who tried to bomb police at Union Square died from injuries after a premature explosion. His companion was killed in the blast.
A federal representative has reportedly been in Pocatello for a week observing motive power and rolling stock on the Oregon Short Line to detect safety appliance law violations. No findings have been announced as yet.
Mrs. Leonora Pierce and Miss Greyta Fulmer were arrested in Denver on charges of obtaining $20 000 from 67 year old widow Harriet A Crowe by false pretenses. Crowe, long blind, paid $5000 in fees on three occasions after Pierce claimed spiritual treatments could restore sight. Fulmer introduced Pierce and they allegedly kept Mrs Crowe engaged in conversations to encourage belief she would regain sight. The arrests followed concerns raised by Crowe's attorney.
The Eagle band will hold a rehearsal tonight at McNichols and Wright hall at 8 o clock. All members are urged to be present.
Boise Statesman reports James L. Brady of the Republican state central committee arrived from Pocatello with private secretary Clarence Dietrich and predicts Taft will win an all in instructing Idaho delegation by acclamation at Chicago. Brady says Taft support is strong statewide and nationwide.
I N Friar, a Big Creek mining man, arrived in the city from Grangeville as Idaho county delegate to the Wallace state convention. He says county delegates were not instructed to back an instructed Taft delegation to the national convention, but the majority are known to favor Secretary Taft's candidacy.
A special city council meeting called by Mayor Loux for 8 o clock tonight will cover sewerage questions, street improvements, and fire hydrant locations. Engineer Havener returns from a county trip to present his final sewerage system cost estimate and a plan to hire a day laborer for cement street crossings with chain gang assistance.
A large Christian Endeavor rally will gather at the Methodist church this evening at eight o'clock. The event invites all members of the city's Endeavor societies and the general public with free admission. An attractive program precedes refreshments at the end.

At a Pocatello meeting the employing barbers’ proposal to lower weekly wage guarantees from 18 to 16 and to add one hour to the workday were voted down. The existing scale remains 18 per week for 60 percent of the trade, as shops close and trade falls. The dispute now rests with the Pocatello Trades and Labor council, with another meeting planned.
A colored lithograph from the Twin Falls North Side Land and Water company highlights the Salmon river land opening in late May. The Salmon river project includes a 5090 foot crest dam 13 miles north of the Nevada line, an 8000 foot tunnel, and a main canal with extensive laterals. The large 150000 acre tract joins Twin Falls tracts to form over half a million irrigable acres, with strong turnout anticipated from Pocatello and nearby settlers.
Pueblo reports the Colorado Republican state convention endorsed President Roosevelt and Governor Buechtel. The entire state delegation will go to Chicago as a unit for Secretary Taft. A bid to endorse Clarence Hamlin for U S senator was blocked to maintain harmony. Delegates at large named Crawford Hill Dr Hubbert Park William Lennox Horace Delong Thomas Walsh and W A Drake.
