Elizabeth A Hitesman through Magee and Funk filed for divorce from Jonathan Hitesman in the circuit court. She states they married in July 1880 and separated in September 1897. alleges he spent earnings on drink, abused the family, and took children aged 8 and 16 to saloons to make them drink. She seeks custody of the children, household goods, and all other relief.

Josey Martin Entangled in Horse Theft Adavit Case
Josey Martin is wanted for stealing a horse from John Bingaman, who swore to an affidavit before Esquire Laing. The horse is valued at $35, and a Cass County constable received a warrant. Bingaman obtained the warrant and traveled to Peru. his plans there are unknown. Martin is described as having prior trouble and possible prior time served.
Wils Berry Appointed Land Commissioner for Arkansas Central
Wils Berry of this city will leave Oct 1 for Fort Smith Ark to serve as land commissioner for the Arkansas Central railroad. The position pays 1200 dollars yearly plus commissions on land sales and offers an on site ground floor office. The line will run 180 miles from Fort Smith to Little Rock with a branch to Hot Springs and trains expected on the first forty miles within sixty days. Land and money donations for the initial forty miles total 3233 000. Samples of regional products are shown at the Peru street fair. The Pharos commends Mr Berry on his good fortune.

Troubles Galore After Husband Leaves for Charles Ray
Mrs. Conrad Ubelhauser of the Westside reports her husband deserted her four boys and moved in with Charles Ray and wife. She says liquor influenced him for seven days and Mrs. Ray influenced him. She claims Mrs Ray beat her when she confronted the conduct. Cooney Obelhauser, Vandalia fireman, told to provide for his wife and children or quit the service. Mrs. Obelhauser is described as frail and a daughter of James Goring of Miami Street.

Independent long distance lines to link Indiana towns with Michigan and Chicago
Reports say independent telephone companies will open long distance service starting November 1 linking Logansport South Bend Michigan City Laporte and Fort Wayne with Detroit Kalamazoo Battle Creek and other Michigan cities. A line from Michigan City to Chicago will connect to Niles and Ohio cities with no local exchange cuts and rates near 56 percent of Central Union long distance rates.

Indiana Attorney General probes Bowen back taxes case
The state through Attorney General Ketcham notified Carroll County that officials and others will be examined regarding Bowen back taxes. Indiana seeks a share of 36000 delinquent Bowens taxes, which the Bowens compromised to a gift of 1300 to the county. The state contends its share is nearly double the compromise price and presses to close the matter after past settlement refusals.

Fire Alarm At Dolan’s Opera House In Elevator Shaft
A fast response to a morning fire alarm at about 7 o clock traced smoke from Dolan’s opera house to a furnace below and an elevator shaft outlet. Firefighters checked the scene as the source was in the lower level with windows open. The town heard the whistle as units arrived.

Train saves woman on Flora platform prank
On a Flora fast train journey last Monday morning a Logansport man restrained a woman who appeared to be attempting suicide as the train moved through Flora. After securing her safety the woman cursed him and the passengers laughed at the scene.
