Washington May 6 reports say scouts may pursue the Spanish fleet from Cadiz or Porto Rico to join a distant fleet. Dispatch boats bring news from Dewey and Hawaii as naval authorities prepare for possible encounters near Porto Rico and the Oregon.
Washington reports a possible McCulloch arrival at Mira Bay near Hong Kong as officials await word from Admiral Dewey. Rumors of the Spanish Cape Verde fleet and Hawaii cede talks spark speculation on war plans and naval bases. Roosevelt receives telegrams on Celene Wood's mounted riflemen unit.
Cleveland May 5 Chauncey M Depew voices view that Congress fuels war talk not front line soldiers and asserts the war should be vigorous short and decisive to honor the nation and teach Europe a lesson He predicts closer Anglo Saxon alliance with England based on unity humanity and peace.
Philadelphia May 5 reports name of the suspect aboard the cruiser St Paul as Howard Hannan a 30 year old Austrian claiming arrival in 1881 and former painter. A rough interior draft found on him raised questions though he denies hostile intent. He will be ashore at League Island navy yard for government action. Tampa May 5 notes Cuban recruitment in New York sending a party to West Tampa rendezvous.
Messages from Singapore report Dewey has taken Manila and acts as governor general. London Vienna and Madrid dispatches discuss Spain’s fleet ammunition shortages and the Cape Verde squadron. Washington reports no word from Dewey but confidence remains in American control of Manila Bay and ongoing military moves in the Caribbean.
Washington May 6 Fighting Joe Wheeler was nominated to major general in the volunteer army and reported at army headquarters yesterday. He was the first to signal readiness for active duty to Secretary Alger. The president has not finalized volunteer army organization, so no designations are likely yet. Wheeler and Fitzhugh Lee are expected to command in their home regions, while Wheeler decides if he will resign his Alabama congress seat depending on war duration.
Washington reports the president is near selecting a civil governor for the Philippine Islands after military occupation. Ex-Secretaries John W. Foster and Benjamin Tracy are among the candidates to handle delicate diplomacy and protect U.S. interests amid the eastern question.
Senor Du Bois, former Urst secretary of the Spanish faction in Washington, addressed about 2,000 at a private capily in Toronto on the war causes. He attacked American people as licentious and venal, warned of conquest dangers to Europe Canada and Mexico, and praised Red Cross aid amid harsh words for U S politicians. Captain Lyons reports Cuban shore fortifications active as Spaniards work along Bahia Honda during the Dolphin’s eleven day cruise.
May 6 dispatch reports Fifth regiment battalions examined by medical officers and the First battalion mustered in. Troops face cold, mud, and illness while awaiting pay and debates over daily wages. Governor Tanner seeks amendments, reports of an engineering corps addition, and possible colonel appointments.

Washington reports the post appropriation bill totaling 99 million with amendments to cap daily mail deliveries and fund rural free delivery. It notes a Senate vote on an anti-subcontracting clause, arms for insurgents on Cuba, and land and labor arbitration measures plus minor statutes as House adjourns. Reports from Baltimore and New York describe an attempt to destroy government magazines at the Potomac proving grounds over twenty five miles from Washington.
