Indiana House votes 85 to 10 to pass the county local option bill in a decisive session. GOP leaders say the swift passage surprised them as lawmakers cheered for several minutes after the tally, marking an easy, controversial measure moving through the chamber.
In a pivotal session, four Republicans opposed the bill while six Democrats joined to back temperance advocates. At the final moment Johnson of the Rebel party changed stance and voted yes, triggering a celebration as the crowd cheered and Johnson cried out.
Indianapolis Sept 26 the Indiana lower house passed the county local option temperance bill by 55 to 45 in a dramatic session. Democrats Green Hottel McKinney Pierbon Sicks White voted for. Republicans Condo Keller Schroeder Geiss voted against. A sobbing Johnson of Vigo voted aye after speaking of his daughter. Bribes and threats were alleged. Gov may pursue Vincennes university case. A large crowd filled the chamber as the vote concluded and a reception followed.
Governor Charles N. Haskell of Oklahoma, treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, resigned after disclosures linking him to Standard Oil matters. He declared he had not been asked to sever ties with the campaign and cited not wanting to embarrass the party. The move followed nationwide calls for his removal amid pressure on Bryan from Hearst and Roosevelt.
A major blaze in Knightstown's business district caused $40,000 to $50,000 in damage at Warren & Macey dry goods and surrounding shops. Richmond fire units were sent but stood down due to low water supply, with help from nearby towns sought as flames spread and water ran short.

Mrs Sidney Jones Colford Jr of Philadelphia outran her parents in a second car as the two couples sped from Philadelphia to Newport. The sensational race, run at high speed, smashed all records between the two cities. Newport welcomed the entrants with royal entertainment, where the younger couple narrowly beat the elders by about two miles.
Intervening petition in the Stimson versus Richmond Manufacturing Co. receivership asserts the plant is solvent and claims the case is manipulated by related interests. It alleges Edward F. Claypool owns the stock shown by Stimson and that Shiveley firm mishandled representation. The filing seeks thirty days to present further proof.
New York on September 26 Edward Soden a cartoonist out of work and heartbroken by his sister death killed his mother and then committed suicide with chloroform. Police found the three bodies this morning and a note was left.
Reno Nov 26 Besse Hall Goodwin known on stage as Maxine Elliott is ordered to appear before Judge Pike on Dec 20 to answer Nat C Goodwin s divorce complaint filed last Monday in District Court The order cites her New York residency and warns that failure to appear will result in a default judgment.
