Republicans appear poised to secure about 295 votes in the Electoral College, well above the 242 needed for their candidate. New England and the East largely back the Ohioan, with Maryland as the sole exception. the Midwest and West show favorable sentiment for the Republican nominee.
General reports indicate Democrats will not gain lower house control next session despite a strong onslaught against Speaker Cannon and his allies. The tally of 2,700 is noted.
New York report on Taft prospects shows a strong Republican lead in national races. Elector forecasts place Taft near 280 votes, with Bryan at about 156. Governors race in New York tilts toward Hughes as Chanler loses ground and Cannon’s allies gain footing.
New York state leans toward Taft with Hughes favored by some. Nevada Arizona and Georgia show Democratic tilt in local campaigns. Arkansas and North Carolina reflect mixed progress. Louisiana Virginia and Alabama trending Democratic. Kansas and Missouri favor Taft or Bryan with regional splits. Wisconsin notes voter apathy may affect turnout.
Thirteen governors reply to Cincinnati Times-Star telegrams, all backing Taft. Picks span New York, Ohio, New Hampshire, Idaho, Wisconsin, Utah, California, South Dakota, Washington, Massachusetts, Kansas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey. Col John K Gowdy of Rushville refutes G W Campbell remarks branding them manufactured to hurt James E Watson. Campbell spoke at the coliseum as Bryan’s arrival neared and labeled Watson as carrying “beer and water” on opposite shoulders. Gowdy calls the assertions false and notes Campbell’s charges about local saloon owners and gamblers.
After leaving the president, he vows to push prosecution of the oil octopus to the end. Telegrams reassure the White House while Labor votes are said not to be deceived by Standard Oil’s political move.
Reports from Washington say Rockefeller may have funded Democratic efforts to undermine Taft. Roosevelt says the claim is a political stratagem and will fail. Kellogg notes no immunity for trust officers. court date set for February in St. Louis. Unofficially, the Standard Oil group is said to have supplied much of Bryan’s campaign funds through hidden subscriptions.
Frank Laugle, drunk, went home on South Third Street and struck his wife with a baseball bat after a dispute. She screamed, neighbors called police. Patrol Driver Roberts arrived. Laugle was arrested and jailed on intoxication and assault and battery charges.
