San Francisco reports reveal McAdoo's position as party contenders maneuver behind the scenes. Cox and Palmer operatives push for endorsements while insiders await a decisive signal from Washington amid a wavering convention mood and November blues.
Miss Culbertson of Richmond becomes the first Wayne County woman to attend a national party convention. She traveled as an alternate but filled a delegate seat in the absence of Indiana’s delegate, gaining a voice in presidential and vice presidential candidate selections. A longtime suffrage advocate, she also served as secretary of the Wayne County Council of Defense during the War.
Pennsylvania railroad lifts some embargoes as strike situation improves. Freight embargoes on Schuylkill division points excluding livestock and perishables are lifted entirely. The Richmond Post Office will grant wage increases effective July 1 under a new postal wage bill. Postmaster Beck’s salary rises to 3700 annually, with base carrier and clerk pay at 1400, up from 1000, and progression to 1800. Rural carriers gain to 2600. Foreman’s salary adjusts to 2400. She claims cruel and inhuman treatment including a May 25 incident when he pursued her into the street in night clothes as officers were summoned. Zimmerman a prominent Indiana Republican has served as Richmond mayor over 22 years with breaks and has a history in medicine and racing horses. Mrs Zimmerman declined to comment.
Definite word from the east confirms McAdoo will not be formally nominated. Speakers like Owens and Davis followed with brief, time limited nominating addresses as the convention prepares to present the platform. The day featured demonstrations, songs, and a lighthearted moment from Governor Brough of Arkansas.
In New York on June 20 Associated Press reports McAdoo said he acted with his approval after being told in San Francisco that his name would not be formally placed before the convention. He offered no further comment.
