Paris June 30 Major General Pershing reports on his return to headquarters that the landing of the first American troops in France has been a complete success. He notes not a man or animal was lost, with only mild illnesses and no serious cases. Troops landed in high morale, well kept, and well housed, reflecting France’s cooperation.
A British steam ship escaped two German submarines about 30 miles off Genoa after a running fight described on arrival. The submarine squad opened fire with deck guns as the steamer gained speed and masked one sub with smoke. The second sub redirected to pursue a smaller vessel after an hour, and a torpedoed steamer was heard to seek assistance.

The president’s stance was relayed to Rev. Dr. James Cannon and pressed by public friends of prohibitionists.
County Clerk Kel reports June 1917 issued 48 marriage licenses in Wayne County, two fewer than June 1916 and three more than June 1915. Divorces for the month totaled 12, making a lower total than the marriages by 36. The record shows Dan Cupid active despite wartime conditions.

Washington report says U S railroads are flourishing and not needing large freight-rate increases for prosperity. The Interstate Commerce Commission denies a 15 percent rate rise to carriers while hinting class rates in the eastern district may rise about 14 percent. Aims to adjust freight revenue loss amid wartime demands with a possible rehearing in months.

Secretary Walter Woodward forwarded a $5,000 check to the unit headquarters from Five Years' Friends for ambulance work.
Paris reports state the first portion of Maj. Gen. William S. Bert’s unit arrived safely at a French port. Rear Admiral Gleaves cables that the expedition reached port without incident. The New York dispatch notes the convoy’s morning arrival and transfer to a nearby camp for initial staging.
The government promises that the submarine will proceed straight to a German port without attacking enemy ships or engaging in further acts of war.
Paris June 30 German forces resumed a violent assault on the Verdun front west of Dead Man hill last night. Picked German troops advanced over a 1.75 mile sector and penetrated the first French line before being driven back on the northwestern slope of Dead Man hill. Berlin reports say several enemy lines were captured south of La Bovelle farm on the Aisne front, and a 500 meter long stretch on Hill 304 northwest of Verdun fell. Russian activity in east Galicia is noted with attacks expected, while French defenses hold amid heavy fighting ongoing since Thursday. Continued on page two.
Paris reports the armored cruiser Kleber struck a mine near Point St Mathieu while en route from Dakar to Brest and sank. Three officers and thirty five sailors are named as lost. Built in Bordeaux, launched 1903, cost about 3.65 million dollars, 426 feet long, armament including eight 6 inch guns. Commander Admiral Thierry visited New York City Hall after arrival.
Washington June 20. Entente nations living in the United States state that the enforced registration under the military conscription act does not imply conscription. Embassies explain that passports are issued only to secure passports for males within age limits and will not require loyalty to the draft.
