Marketmaster McKinley says the city market fails its founding purpose after six months of experience. He cites price fixing by seven farmers and thirteen gardeners among twenty nine market participants, with costs exceeding receipts since 1910 and 1911, arguing the market harms housewives and public finances.
Salem Massachusetts faced a second fire within a day near Derby wharf as crowds crowded the south section amid a triple alarm. Lacrosse Wis June 27 Meager advices say Lanesboro Minn a town of 1000 people is under six feet of water after a cloudburst. Wires and rail communication to the town are cut off. Reports indicate no loss of life.
Clerks at the Palais Royal thank Mr and Mrs Henry Goldfinger for granting them a half holiday each Thursday during July and August. This gesture is noted as a personal benefit to staff.
Chicago June 27 Joe Mandot and manager Tommy Walsh were to day en route to New Orleans where Mandot will box ten rounds with Johnny Dundee on July. The pair left here last night.
Richmond hosted the largest Phi Delta Kappa convention with about 400 attendees including 90 delegates and 90 alternates. John Gauchat of Indianapolis was reelected president by a slim margin, Gerald Fitzgibbons won secretary-treasurer by a large majority, and J Fred Bollmeyer of Richmond was named editor while Leon Louise of Chicago became business manager, placing both in full control of the magazine as plans for expansion and new publication sites were announced.
Charles Fish seeks release for his 16 year old daughter Mildred from Dayton authorities, aiming to counter William Wood's bid to custody of his daughter Madaline. Both girls were detained on delinquency charges after being approached by George Anderson, who allegedly lured them to Dayton, rented rooms, and claimed a wife sister relation. Anderson later faced bicycle theft charges and was bound over to grand jury. Fish notes his daughter was briefly married, but he denies knowing Anderson, suggesting the meeting was a chance encounter. Both fathers want their daughters to return home and restore family standing.
Terre Haute Indiana June 27 Without solicitation and without asking for a bonus the J W Davis Co of Davenport Iowa has come to Terre Haute and is vigorously planning to build the largest greenhouse in America near here It was incorporated in Indianapolis during the past week at 325000 The company bought 58 acres of level land at 550 an acre There will be 50000 square feet of glass in the eight houses It will be a little town in itself consist ing of a heating plant a power plant a post office and express office and many cottages for the men Carload shipments will be made to Chicago Indianapolis Columbus and Louisville
Cambridge City, Ind. June 27. Death brushed by Mrs. L. D. Ogborn as lightning struck a glass lid in her kitchen during Thursday afternoon’s storm. The lid shattered, filling the room with smoke, but she was badly frightened and unharmed. the glass acted as a non conductor protecting her.
A white and black kitten slept in a car vestibule, ignored by most riders as the East Haven line carriage jolted. The conductor made a newspaper bed for it and planned to take the animal home to the conductor’s kids if no one claimed it, signaling a hopeful future.
A joint city hospital laboratory project advances after a Commercial Club meeting. A committee led by Dr Louis F. Ross plans a lab at Reid hospital with Dr Lou Clem as chemist, sharing equipment costs between city and hospital, aiming for soon installation and joint supervision by the hospital and city health department.
William A Bond attorney for George S Hamilton seeks 5000 damages from Alfred Underhill in circuit court at New Castle citing an assault on February 25 1913 while Hamilton was gathering firewood near the railroad east of the city He alleges Underhill tripped him threw him down tied his arms and legs leaving Hamilton paralyzed in his left arm and with a seriously affected right arm hindering his ability to work He plans to prove Underhill is the meanest man in Wayne county and will investigate his police docket record and justice court history.
French bankers received a report that President Huerta of Mexico had shipped 2.5 million dollars in gold to Paris for deposit. The note suggested Huerta intended to move assets to secure funds abroad amid unrest and political uncertainty.
The noted wholesale dry goods house H. B. Claflin & Co and its department stores entered receivership on June 25. John B. Claflin said expansion created capital needs the firm cannot meet. The nine million dollar corporation has millions in obligations, many past due, with insufficient resources to satisfy them.
City Controller McMahan completes repayment to cover a 25 435.20 shortage from past mismanagement in the special street improvement fund. A 5 000 final payment today finishes the fix, followed by transferring 4 072.78 to the light plant sinking fund to settle bonds wrongly drawn from the fund.
Office bulletin from Washington announces new business postal cards printed in green on cream stock. The design features Thomas Jefferson replacing McKinley and the cards are perforated for tearing. They replace the current No 4 cards, with tighter rules on window envelopes and white only deliveries.
Harold Karsh a nearly sixteen year old youth from North Ninth street is held as prosecutors consider charges. He admits offenses including pocket picking at Hawkins Beach, looting a girl at high school, burglarizing Nicholson Printing, robbing the Zwissler home, breaking into Walter Kuntz residence, and stealing $15.59 from Mrs Jenkinson. Police suspect more robberies and say he has a history of similar acts. Continued on Page Six.
The Commercial club through William Vore seeks to host the national Seventh Day Adventists encampment in Richmond Indiana. The plan envisions about 250 tents and an organized ten day gathering on camping grounds with auditorium and dining tents. Dates considered point to the first ten days in September after Chautauqua.
