A fierce rainstorm swept Indiana causing wide damage across cities and rural areas. Reports from Lebanon, Danville, Greencastle, and Tipton describe flooded streets, washed-out tracks, and ruined crops. Lightning and high winds damaged buildings, barns, and grain elevators as rail lines suffered outages and repairs began.
About twenty Richmond residents were left in Centerville last night as the Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern traction line failed to deliver service. Tracks were shut, rain drenched passengers huddled near locked stations, and a meat market owner offered shelter until he left. A car finally arrived at 1 10 this morning after enduring hours of exposure and confusion.
Judge Fox of the Wayne circuit court sits in Marion today, complaining he is tired of side trips. He vows to quit as soon as he finishes the cases in progress.
Washington June 26 Whatever may come of the corporation tax President Taft is entirely willing to assume the entire responsibility for it. He studied out the plan long before he was inaugurated. The idea of the tax was not an emergency one nor was it devised to meet any particular condition in the senate. The president studied out the idea of a levy upon corporations and in time he had the assistance of former President Roosevelt. Longworth declares Taft views it as not a new proposition and says Taft drafted it before March 15 when Congress was in session.
Washington June 24 Vice President Sherman's hot weather suit drew envy in the Senate. The Georgia Senators speculated on the cloth while noting it was not cotton bagging. The Vice President, quoting Mr Adamsce, defended the garment as fitting for warm days and in line with protocols.
Mrs. Howard Gould celebrates a court victory as Justice Dowling grants a legal separation and alimony of 36000 per year. She praises vindication, thanks Justice Dowling and Mr. Shearn, and expresses gratitude to the press for support during the trial.
Paris June 26 Premier Clemenceau introduced a bill in the chamber of deputies for the total suppression of lotteries. His plan for settlement of awards is to unite all smaller lotteries into one vast scheme away with the system by declaring it legal.
Yesterday afternoon a small blaze broke out in a pile of rubbish inside the Harmon's barn. No injuries reported and firefighters controlled the fire without spread to surrounding structures. Authority or exact location details not provided.
New York June 26 Elsie Sigel and Chu Gain, affluent Chinese restaurant owner, are now believed married in Philadelphia. The fact shapes murder motive as William Leon is suspected to have killed Elsie Sigel and threatened Chu Gain. Witness Chong Sing lied about sleeping. Sing P Lee says Leon heads for California. Leon sought a business role with Lee but negotiations ended after a visit to Middletown. Continued on Page Eight.
