Weather last week brought oppressive heat in Richmond with Mercury reaching 92 degrees on Sunday afternoon. A Saturday storm caused brief humidity spikes and a torrent of rain in the western county with high winds and lightning. Farmers welcome the warmer stretch as corn prospects rise, though rain totals vary and recent records were compiled by meteorological observer Walter Voseler.
Dogs have run wild in Wayne township for a month, with thirteen cows killed after severe bites and six sheep slaughtered. Turkeys and chickens also killed, with a township dog fund payout reaching 949 dollars, exceeding several prior years of township ship expenditures.
The Light Heat and Power team fell to the Nationals 4 to 4 at Athletic Park yesterday. A former league catcher played for L H P but could not stem the Reds threat as Springfield Reds faced the Giants in the afternoon contest.

A 14 year old Cleo Shaffer died and seven others wounded near Warren Indiana when a car driven by 12 year old Russell Gray tipped after steering failed. Victims include Lethes Zeigler Mae Brown and Beesie Shaffer with multiple injuries.
The Knights of Pythias lodge memorial service in Fountain City drew a large crowd. The ceremony at the Pythian hall included funeral rites, followed by a procession to the cemetery to decorate graves. Rev. H. Robert Smith delivered the principal address with Fountain City musicians performing.
Wayne County Board of Charities appeals to citizens to stop the proposed insane ward adjoining the jail. Commissioners meet July 5 to award contracts for the ward, a dining room, kitchen, boiler room, and other improvements at the county infirmary. The board cites Dr. S. E. Smith Dr. T. Henry Davis and Secretary Butler and warns that the plan provides inadequate female care and risks long detentions.
Delegates from about three hundred are expected for the annual encampment of United Spanish War Veterans in Richmond with large delegations from Indianapolis Fort Wayne and South Bend. Meetings set for June 27 at the Circuit Court room with welcome by Mayor Zimmerman and remarks by Col Edward J Chinon of Boston.

In dense fog the steamer La Rochelle was rammed by the Yews in the English Channel. The collision killed the captain and eight crew of La Rochelle, nine men in all, with ten survivors rescued by the Yews. The Yews backed away, water flooding its hull, as rescue efforts followed.
The council will meet tonight to reconsider the vehicle ordinance long in limbo. An agreement is now seen as possible and the measure may be passed with amendments reducing most vehicle types. The Municipal League visitors’ entertainment is also on the agenda.
Glidden tourists reached Hot Springs Arkansas where Clifford Bevington of Westcott, driving the Westcott car, was third for the Chicago trophy. A telegram to H L Ashley reports strong record so far with hopes for a good finish despite penalties and hot weather. The course today ran through Arkansas to Texarkana with penalties as high as 150 points for Westcott.
