Government inspectors visited Richmond in recent weeks and an option on land west of the city was taken. If the project proceeds, a factory would produce airplanes for the government and include a large test field. The site would boost local industry and attract workers from other areas.
The draft Indiana platform vows winning the war as top priority while outlining postwar policies on labor reform, disability rehabilitation, incentives for industry, agriculture, and transportation. It supports a budget system, tariff science, labor policy, and equal suffrage via federal amendment or state constitution if needed.
Ensign B Keyes, U S naval aviator, describes the June 4 dogfight off the Dutch coast where five British large seaplanes fought nineteen German planes. One enemy craft was shot down in flames, another out of control, amid engine trouble and air tactics that left the Germans outmatched.

Fifty men enrolled by the United States Public Service Reserve labor committee will work on Wayne County farms this summer. Washington reports Germany weighs emigration controls to tax evasion after peace. A draft bill would require emigrants to leave 20 percent of taxable property in Germany and continue personal, state, and communal tax payments for five years after peace. Deprivation of nationality would enforce the penalties, with restoration possible upon voluntary tax payment.
In Paris on Tuesday June 18 the first Polish regiment of the first division entered the front line trenches opposite the Germans. Amid cannon fire the unit received its battle flag and swore to defend Poland, with officials from Poland and allied nations present. General Archinald stated the action is a reply to Germany’s claim Poland’s fate is settled.
Amsterdam dispatch from June 19 reports that the Deutsches Tages Zeitung in Berlin says if 10,000 Germans expelled from China and interned in Australia are proven, the German government will imprison 10,000 inhabitants of French occupied districts until Germans are returned to China and compensated.
Washington June 19 express monopoly created under government auspices must be dissolved after the war emergency ends under provisions of a contract signed today by representatives of the express companies and the railroad administration.
Samuel M. Ralston former Indiana governor spoke as permanent chairman at the Indiana Democratic state convention in Indianapolis praising Woodrow Wilson and urging his renomination in 1920. He lauded the president’s war leadership reforms and criticized Republicans for opposing war and failing to back Wilson’s policies.
Ogden Utah June 19 Utah will produce a million tons of sugar beets this year meeting the needs of its half million population and leaving enough to supply an American army of 2 000 000 men with sugar for a year J W Jones sugar beet specialist of the US department of agriculture stated at the Inter Mountain district county farm agents convention in this city He said Utah's 1918 production will reach one million tons sugar beets.
Reported from Rheims and a broad war front describe German bombardment and infantry assault west of Rheims repulsed with heavy losses. Italian and Austrian actions along the Piave and Asiago front show mixed results with Italians holding positions while Austrians press near Capo Sile and Fossalta.
