While preparing the first official aerial mail trip between New York and Washington, a bullet disabled the engine. Hadley landed safely after a glide, with a broken propeller blade and pierced engine cylinder. A $1000 reward is offered by Dr Christmas for the shooter. Hadley, in aeronautical work years, left Richmond twelve years ago.
