The P R R tells the Commission its position on general freight interchange at Richmond. The railroad warns that enforcement of the order could lead to a United States Supreme Court case, citing a recent ruling favorable to railroads.
Indianapolis June 10 The Pennsylvania railroad agreed to a limited interchange plan with C C L at Richmond after Indiana Railroad Commission rulings and court decisions. The commission, while rejecting a general interchanges, approved freight only exchanges for industries along the C C L line, with the possibility of further action to enforce the order. The Pennsylvania warned of United States Supreme Court action if forced into broader traffic interchange.
Local members of the Sons of Veterans and the Ladies Auxiliary attended the Terre Haute state convention Tuesday and Wednesday. Attendees from this city include Lawrence Handley Qza Coryell Mrs Della Phenis Miss Flora Coryell Miss Carrie Harris and Mrs May Evans. Mrs Phenis state president of the Ladies Auxiliary was named chairman of the division council and Mr Handley past commander was named division chaplain. Next year’s convention will be in South Bend. Local delegates praised the reception at Terre Haute.
Thomas J. Bloom, a former miller and elevator man from New Madison Ohio, has returned from Denver where he had lived for several years. He plans no definite future course yet and is currently visiting friends in town.
At a union meeting the Cigar Makers elected the same slate of officers as nominated earlier. The list of officers remains unchanged for the ensuing six months.
Dayton plans to welcome Richmond with a large delegation for the Wilbur and Orville Wright tribute in mid June. The Young Men’s Business Club aims to charter trains or cars, but Dayton officials insist only uniformed groups join the parade. Cincinnati’s Business Club will attend with brass but is barred from parade participation. A formal Richmond invitation was extended, and Dayton will host a two day program featuring a grand parade, medals, school children, fireworks, and illuminated processions.
A boarding house proprietor, Mrs. Jennie Donnell of 914 South A street, allegedly attempted death by inhaling gas last evening around 10 o'clock. Neighbors rushed to aid as she became hysterical, marking a second reported attempt after a laudanum episode a year earlier. The gas did not affect her, and the physician advised letting hysteria run its course.
Critics and parents praised the senior class for a creditable Merchant of Venice at the Gennett theatre. No single star emerged as the entire cast impressed, with Shylock Portia Bassanio Launcelot Jessica and Gratiano drawing applause. The high school orchestra under Will Earhart complemented the performance with challenging numbers.
The Reverend Edward Everett Hale, chaplain of the United States Senate and author of The Man Without a Country, died in Boston at age 87 from heart disease. Born April 3, 1823, Hale was a noted clergyman and philanthropist, educated at Boston Latin School and Harvard, with a long literary and public service career. Funeral arrangements were not finalized as of publication, with family awaiting arrival of relatives.
The General Synod of the Lutheran church in Richmond closes with Washington DC chosen as the meeting site. Delegates discuss attendance, travel costs, and potential shifts to biennial meetings while funds and obligations for Tabitha Orphans Home are reviewed. A motion to cover Pullman car fares is adopted for those traveling overnight.
