A German submarine is believed sunk after an hour and a half duel with an armed American steamer. The engagement involved 35 submarine shots and 25 by the steamer, with the final steamer shot apparently sending the submarine below the water. Taft chaired Washington meeting noting Red Cross week. Three-fourths of funds go to a national war fund, one-fourth to local relief. A ten-member committee and trustees will oversee the local drive.
In Racine Wisconsin on June 6 John Bo siingto a foreigner employed at the J I Case Tin plant was forced to kiss the American flag by about 300 fellow workers after allegedly saying he would not register and that he would not fight for the United States. The man was made to crawl on his knees to the flag spread on the floor, forced to salute, and then escorted to the shop door and dismissed.

The French steamer Orenoque of 2372 tons repelled a German submarine attack in the Atlantic on April 22 as she steamed to a West African port. The submarine was sighted half submerged. after the fourth shot, it disappeared and the steamship returned fire.
Kansas City dispatches report fourteen deaths from last night’s outbreak across Missouri and Kansas. Centralia Missouri saw five killed and fifty homes destroyed, with numerous injuries and other fatalities implied near Richmond Elmont Topeka Lawrence Clinton. Floods followed, with rising rivers and widespread property damage reported.
Richmond youths Leland Hadley and J D Peacock have signed applications for the reconstruction corps of the Friends church in France and plan to enter the training school at Hav erford Pennsylvania on June 15. Others, including Sidney Brown Arend Winskamp and Earl Fowler Earlham graduates, have signified intent to enroll as blanks arrive. Funds for church relief are received daily with a hoped $650 monthly from local Friends.
ANDERSON Ind June 6 Miss Verna Hoke president of the State Teachers Federation plans to investigate the dismissal of Principal D D Ramsey of the Whitewater school at Richmond by Superintendent J T Giles She has asked for all data on the case Teachers and school men across the state are interested Reports say Ramsey was dismissed without full revelations of Giles tactics The latest exposes an autocratic attitude toward teachers used to obtain data for lectures delivered presumably for Day Teachers complain of the pool autocratic tone of the superintendent They say Giles never granted complete satisfaction on questions leaving the impression he would reply at his convenience This mirrors charges from Marion teachers and patrons last year and suggests teachers were forced to compile data for lectures with no pay. The article notes the possibility Giles was paid for the lectures.
About ten percent of Wayne County's population registered yesterday across sixty five precincts for the draft. Three thousand seven hundred thirty men aged 21 to 31 enrolled, with roughly eighty five percent deemed physically able. Most did not seek exemption, including many married men with dependents.
