Washington reports 251 mills used 3,346,106 cords of wood producing 2,118,947 tons of pulp in 1908. Spruce led with 64 percent, while hemlock and poplar followed. Domestic spruce averaged $8.76 per cord. imported spruce $10.60. hemlock cheapest at $6.02. Total pulp wood cost about $28 million. 1908 consumption fell about 16 percent from 1907 amid higher prices and uncertain business conditions.
