Paris June 1 The Germans launched another effort to storm French positions at Le Mort Homme Dead Man's Hill last night. A furious bombardment shattered the French trenches and the assault was pushed back with stubborn resistance. The French war office announced the failure in its official communique today.
Richmond municipal electric plan to abandon the old Light Heat and Power plant within a week. All electricity for Richmond and vicinity will be generated at the Municipal plant. Superintendent Kleinknechtwald notes the city plant led fifty plants in efficiency with production costs 25 percent lower than others. May gross revenue near 15000, April 16000 with net profit around 11000. A high tension line between Richmond and New Partie is under construction.
E M Haas secretary of the commercial club will attend the Republican convention next week as one of the assistant sergeants at arms, appointed through the state Republican committee.
Colonel Roosevelt passed through Richmond at 12 05 this morning aboard No. 44. A Pullman porter polished his shoes while admirers watched. The ex president headed from St Louis to Newark and then Oyster Bay for rest before the convention.
Acting on a recommendation from Dr. R J Leonard and the industrial survey committee, the Richmond school board has applied to the state board of education for financial aid to hire an agricultural supervisor in charge of the gardens. The move comes as Centerville and Center Township plan to request a supervisor for each county, signaling statewide limits.
Official White House statement after Carranza note confirms American troops will remain in Mexico for now. A formal note outlining reasons will be sent to the Carranza government soon.
In El Paso on June 1 observers say 12,000 American troops in Mexico confront a Mexican force of about 150,000 to 250,000. Yet belief remains that General Pershing and his men can handle the situation. Carranza’s note demanding immediate withdrawal is viewed as unlikely to threaten the campaign.

The landlord of a rooming house accused the woman who brought Pearl to Richmond of blackmail.
Six young women Misses Lottie Banker Mary Seeman Bessie C Moore Marjorie Mayhew Mable Orner and Hasseltine C Wilson were awarded diplomas from Reid Memorial Training School for Nurses at First Presbyterian church. John L Rupe presented diplomas after the Florence Nightingale pledge. Graduation address by Rev J J Rae. Program opened with organ by Mrs Fred Miller and included hymns a violin piece by Miss Ruth Scott.
J. T. Beck of Carlisle Indiana is expected in the city this week by J. O. Edgerton township trustee who intends to close a contract with him for the position of agricultural supervisor of the township.

In Chicago on June 1 1916 political clouds loom as the Republican national committee prepares to hear sixty two contested seats filed by southern delegates. Key figures including George W Perkins George von L Meyer and Herbert L Satterlee arrive to back Colonel Roosevelt while Will iam McKinley leads the Illinois entry and other prominent politicians gather. A late relief comes with Colonel Roosevelt announcing he will not attend the convention.
United States forecast calls for probable showers and thunderstorms tonight and Friday with warmer temperatures. The Western storm moves slowly bringing rain to parts of Indiana as a warm wave follows. Temperatures expected to rise above 81 degrees in the shade within 36 hours. W. E. Moore, Weather Forecaster.
Earl D. Fowler and Howard L. Carey of Fairmount, Earlham College graduates, returned home from a year with the Society of Friends ambulance corps in northern France after serving abroad.
Richmond prepares for a new unit as sixteen West Richmond young men join Sergeant Bond to form a military training club and begin drill once equipment is secured. An East of river group plans a similar effort and will meet soon at the recruiting office.
Miss Mary Kennedy, county visiting nurse, will return to Richmond from Denver next Tuesday after three weeks away tending to her brother's estate. While in Colorado she studied tuberculosis control methods and noted a high initial migration of residents afflicted with TB. She cited a high child death rate linked to parental nonresistance.
A morning crusade by Chief Goodwin arrested six drivers for operating motor cars without state licenses. Five pleaded guilty and were fined plus costs. One, Paul Minor, fined the city runabout used by the municipal light plant after licenses were reportedly being repaired. Other arrests included Zeitz with a Westcott testing machine, Thomas of Liberty, McConaha near Centerville, Thorp of Transportation Service, Lyons with two manufacturer signs, and Reagan for the truck owner.
Harry M. Caine of Hackett and Caine grocers has been missing since Tuesday midnight after a wreck near Knightstown Indiana. He reportedly wandered from nervous shock after a delivery wagon crash while returning from Indianapolis speedway races with Frank Shallenberg. his brother in law W N Hockett fears mental imbalance. Caine, 32, slender 150 pounds 3 feet 8 inches, was last seen in a grey suit after the accident sighting.
The late Joseph Gray of Dublin Indiana filed for probate in circuit court. Executor Wright Sparks of Dublin bonded at 27 500. Estate includes Dublin home, local farm property valued at 13 000 and personal property 700. Second wife Jennie Gray to receive 2 000 and Dublin home title. Granddaughters Goldie Decker and Bertha Schumacher get 400 each. Remainder to first wife Elizabeth Gray's children Charles Gray Joseph Gray and Viola Johnson.
Ascension day was observed in Richmond churches today with Catholic masses at 5 7 and 9 am. Lutheran services were held as well. St John’s featured Rev A J Feeger preaching in German this morning and again tonight at 7 30. St Paul’s Lutheran had Rev Conrad Huber deliver an Ascension sermon at 10 am.
The government press bureau announced that reports of reconciliation in Ireland were premature, but utmost hopefulness was felt today among observers in London and among political factions. The tone reflected cautious optimism about potential progress despite official statements.
James E. Watson of Rushville will be the speaker at Memorial Day services in Spartansburg at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Union City band will provide music, and weather permitting the service will be held outdoors.
Daniel McGuire aged 52, blind all his life, was found dead by his sister Anna Maroney in his sitting room at home yesterday afternoon around 8. The coroner ruled death from heart failure and pneumonia. He leaves two brothers John and Mike and two sisters Kate Alvey and Anna MaToney. Funeral set for St Mary’s Church in Richmond tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Richmond high school presented the senior class play The Man From Home in Murray theatre this afternoon at 2 30 with a near capacity audience. A repeat show was scheduled for this afternoon. Whitney McGuire as Daniel Voorhees Pike led a strong cast with Elizabeth Bates as Ethel Granger-Simpson and Robert Weed as Mariano delivering solid performances.
In South Bend Indiana a street car crashed into an automobile on Lincoln Way East near Mishawaka last night. Two people died, a third is critically injured and a fourth fatally injured. The dead are Mrs. Edgar P Galbreath 38 and Margaret Galbreath 14.
London June 1 violent gales were responsible for failures on the Antarctic expedition led by Ernest Shackleton. Following news of Shackleton's safe arrival at Stanley Falkland Islands, further details of the loss of the Endurance were received today.
Rev. L. P. Jones, pastor of the Universalist church, resigns to resume the pastorate at Ruthven Ontario Canada. He had left Ruthven eleven years ago in June and returns with a material salary increase.
