Martha Smith a Earlham college summer student faced allegations of stealing from fellow coeds amid narcotics rumors. Police advised confession, she admitted guilt, and college authorities promptly dismissed her with promises of no prosecution and no public details.
Mrs. John Zwissler, wife of a well known baker, suffered two broken ribs and bruises when a runaway wagon on the National road in front of the country club overturned. Her husband and Joseph Werner were also injured slightly. The party had attended a Knights of Columbus picnic at Jackson park and were returning home. The horse bolted after the wreck and was captured near Sixteenth and Malin streets. the Zwisslers and Werner aided the injured until they reached home. Mrs. Zwissler’s condition was reported satisfactory but she will remain in bed for weeks.
William H. Taft arrived at Oyster Bay and rode to Saga More Hill to meet President Roosevelt and Secretary Root. He planned to consult on his acceptance speech, hoping to trim it after leaving it with the printer. He rode with guards and faced curious crowds aboard the ferry, where a warm Taft smile eased a tense moment with a city cop.
Clerks in the Richmond division freight office work day and night as Panhandle Line pushes freight business to normal. A heavy grain movement from local crops keeps the division busy, with cars filled and the depot humming. Shifts in Ohio grain also promise return of idle cars to service.
State inspector John Owens reports yesterday’s dairy inspections in northern Wayne County. The surge benefits John D Rockefeller who holds about 22 million dollars in the firm’s capital stock, amid market rumors and heightened speculation.
