Miners Mourn as Explosion Feared at Fairmount Mines
In Fairmount West Virginia December 6 a collapse and explosion at Monongahela mines six eight and nine eight left many miners entombed and feared dead. Workers were mainly Hungarian with at least two wives among the victims. A rescue train and medical staff rushed to the scene as authorities warned the toll could reach from four to seven hundred with two hundred dead reported by the mine manager. Ignited gas is blamed for the disaster.
