Tragic confrontation ends in widespread panic as six known dead and eighty five missing. Troops fire on looters while ghoul activity and looting plague the town. Firefighters battle spreading flames as tracks burn and cars derail.
Boston April 1 A vast Chelsea blaze leaves ten thousand homeless and many dead or missing. Firefighters fail to halt the flames as dynamite and military aid fail to save the business district. U.S. Marines patrol streets while relief funds assemble.
Police raided William Musser’s saloon on North Fortree street Sunday and arrested five men for violating the Blind Tiger law. The group, including Job Walker Herbert Wickett James Burley and Walter Huell, were found in a room with beer and whiskey awaiting a patrol wagon. Musser denied selling liquor and pleaded not guilty. hearings set after the Smith Vaughan case. All defendants released on bond.

Chicago April 1 The Tribune reports unanimity among national and state banks and Clearing House associations in smaller cities against the Aldrich currency bill now before Congress. Most centers oppose the measure in its present form, citing cash reserve and officer investment clauses as harmful and unneeded. Some favor it only as a temporary panic shield but demand major changes to avoid financial harm. Delegations to Washington are being prepared to press House allies to defeat the bill.
Sermons by new Methodist pastors were strong and well received at Fifth Street and Third Street Fairview churches. Revs J C Graham and A J Carey addressed large audiences as Easter programs were planned for next Sunday. Returning pastors W M Nelson Grace and R J Wade First preached first sermons of the year, with congregations hoping for a more prosperous year.

A blast of four thousand pounds of nitroglycerine at the Aetna mill of the Dupont Powder Co. rocked the area in Chicago on April 1, destroying buildings within a wide radius and causing heavy property damage. Twenty men narrowly escaped serious injury as night shift workers fled to safety.
