End to High Point strike as open shop pact signed

A six week lockout and picketing ended as workers returned to mills on September 17 after a negotiated agreement between employers and unions. Governor Bickett mediated, approving terms including nonunion rights, piecework reforms, and a 5 hour day with a half holiday. Militia was ordered to Albemarle amid textile strike tensions.

Turner and Harmon Involved in Jail Escape Attempt

TM Turner, held on a charge of larceny, nearly escaped from the city jail Sunday night with a hack saw but was foiled by police. Alfred Harmon aided Turner and was charged with attempting to assist the escape. Harmon was out on bail at the time. Turner was bound over to the superior court with bond set at 50 dollars, while Harmon received six months on county ponds.

News from Route 4 a Mary A Clodfelter

Andrew Sell died Sept 6 after weeks of illness from complications. He left a wife and child, two sisters, a brother, and many friends. Funeral held at Welburg church cemetery where he was a member for years. Mrs C Smith is ill. K C Wyer had a light stroke but is improving. John Wall and Mrs Co Smith Jr and Mrs Bert Weavil are recovering. A girl was born to Mr and Mrs Crells, Winston visit. Shady Grove meetings ended Thursday with good talks. Dust and noise persist but hope for rest grows.

City borrows a litomobile to bolster fire protection

Fire Chief A B Horney of High Pont's department sent J W Reach and Jim Pike to Charlotte Thursday morning to retrieve a loaned fire truck. The Charlotte fire unit had arrived after Bed Pont purchased a new truck following a recent city strike. The north side truck, damaged weeks ago, underscored the need for added protection.

Young Woman Dies in Local Hospital

Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis aged 29 died at a local hospital Thursday morning after a long illness. She is survived by her husband RE C Lewis three children and three brothers J G Cranford Arthur Cranford of Troy and Edward Cranford of Lillington. Services were held at the Tate street home Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock with remains later interred at Oakwood cemetery.

Miss Bessie McClure and H C Cross were quietly married Sunday in Norfolk with intimate friends present. Mrs Cross is popular in the city and has long worked at Allen's Department store. The couple will reside in Norfolk. Also notes on local students resuming studies at Greensboro College for Women and the death of Jessie Beodenheimer, age 67, with funeral services held Saturday and burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

Abduction case against Hoff man and Mrs Bell stalled in court

Judge Kirkman heard the case against R C Hoffman and Mrs Verda Bell for registering as man and wife at a local hotel though not married. The state sought a Monday continuance as witnesses and lawyers were unavailable, with police alleging Mrs Bell was taken to the hotel by Hoffman after her husband found her missing.

Doctors of District to Gather Here Soon

The Eighth District Medical Society plans its semi annual meeting in Greensboro on September 24 at the O Henry hotel. Representatives from ten counties are expected along with Dr Carl V Reynolds of Asheville. Papers will cover tuberculosis mouth infections thyroidism X ray diagnosis and influenza among others. The president Dr John A Williams and secretary Dr W M Jones will preside with both afternoon and evening sessions and a dinner hosted by Guilford County physicians.

W L Stamey says the city council committee is near completion of plans to equip all city school grounds with well appointed playgrounds. The panel will allocate funds and arrange details to provide equipment at every school site.

Youthful Offenders Up Old Fashioned Revival

A municipal court arraigned youths aged 12 to 18 on larceny charges. John Turner was acquitted, Alfred Harmon sentenced to 60 days on county roads, and Edgar Harmon found guilty with the other youth awaiting decision due to age. The case involves repeated theft of carpenters tools, a typewriter, Victrola parts, and a ring with initials. Bert Culpepper to begin revival at Wesley Memorial Church on September 18 following a Greensboro success and praise from Rev. A W Plyler.

Whiskey case and other municipal court actions

Joe Welborne pleaded guilty to possessing more than a lawful amount of whiskey for sale in municipal court. Judge Kirkman fined $100 and taxed costs, with costs to the city and the fine donated to associated charities. Will Boone was found guilty of assault on his wife and ordered to pay costs and leave the city within a week. Lee Bryant pleaded guilty to larceny of pants and received 30 days on county roads.

A Nifty Home and Farm at the Burton Place

Eugene Segraves bought the old Burton place three miles west of town, acquiring a modern two story home with outbuildings and 13 acres. He reports a good start on the farm, selling tobacco well, with the Segraves family content and hopeful. The Greensboro News lauds Governor Bickett for addressing the High Point lockout and urges a clear public statement. It stresses industrial-war style stakes and the governor’s power to sway public opinion, noting inaction is worst.

Colonel E Denson to Washington after visit

Colonel E J Denson who had been visiting his parents here is ordered to Washington with his wife and daughter. He recently returned from France where he served with the third and 28th divisions and the third army in Germany. He is a High Point man and West Point graduate. In France he was on the staff of the third division and later assistant chief of staff of the 28th division. After armistice he served on the staff of the third army in Germany before returning to the United States.
