British Drive Gains on Southern Front in France War Report

Mount Vernon Torpedoed En Route Home From France

Washington. The United States army transport Mount Vernon formerly Kronprinzessin Cecilie was torpedoed by an enemy submarine about 800 miles from the French coast while homeward bound. The ship returned to port with no reported casualties and carried crew and potentially sick and wounded soldiers. A troop train accident near Cotton Grove curve killed four people and injured several others, including Mr. W H Turner and his son and daughter, with dead sent to China Grove for burial.

High Pointer Killed in France Report Confirmed Alive

Memorial exercises for George C. Wright and Henry V. Traynham, once reported killed in action in France, now reveal George C. Wright is alive after a letter dated Aug. 13. Mrs. Wright received the message last week, government war risk insurance already paid, and an attorney seeks official clarification from Adjutant General McCain. Wright entered service in 1917 and went to France last year.

The Hornet Editor Charged With Disloyalty

William Henry Davis editor of The Hornet and Fork postmaster is charged with disloyalty, fired from the post and the office abolished. The draft call targets ages 19 20 and 32 36 with Sept 12 1900 and Sept 13 1872 births required to register on Sept 12. The Allies show signs of a potential quick shift in the battle front, and a line behind the Hindenburg line remains as a safety.
