Major Sam H. Smith Dies at 72 in Asheville
Major Samuel H. Smith longtime Winston Salem leader dies from Brights disease in Asheville at age 72. Funeral held in Winston Sunday afternoon, interred Moravian graveyard. He was a former mayor, postmaster, drug dealer, civic leader, and served in the Confederate army. Survived by six of eight children and brothers including Commodore Jas T. Smith and uncle to Mrs W L Stamey and W L Smith of High Point. He also served on staff for Governors Fowle and Glenn and later on Gen Metts Confederate Veterans staff. Commercial agent for Norfolk & Western Railway in recent years and a Moravian Church member.
