Major Sam H. Smith Dies at 72 in Asheville

Major Samuel H. Smith longtime Winston Salem leader dies from Brights disease in Asheville at age 72. Funeral held in Winston Sunday afternoon, interred Moravian graveyard. He was a former mayor, postmaster, drug dealer, civic leader, and served in the Confederate army. Survived by six of eight children and brothers including Commodore Jas T. Smith and uncle to Mrs W L Stamey and W L Smith of High Point. He also served on staff for Governors Fowle and Glenn and later on Gen Metts Confederate Veterans staff. Commercial agent for Norfolk & Western Railway in recent years and a Moravian Church member.

Stanton Becomes Mayor as Council Chooses New Leader

Dr D A Stanton who has served on the city council since 1917 was selected to fill the expired mayoral term of William P Ragan. Councilman John W Hedrick will also serve as representative from the first ward. The council delayed selecting a fourth ward representative. The council plans to oppose a proposed gas and streetcar rate increase, with City Attorney Dr Dred Peacock preparing the case, though he is ill and may request a postponement. The city notes a parallel rate with Greensboro and urges residents not to accept higher gas costs.

Guilford County oversubscribed its fourth Liberty Loan quota by 1,267,300 dollars, totaling 3,451,600 against a 2,184,300 target. Big Bug Juice Reservoir Thriving Business Reported

Deputy J. E. Wagner and Deputy Marshal aided by local officers captured a 165 gallon copper still near High Rock in Randolph County Friday night. Two bushels of meal and bran were found. no whiskey. Vehicle tracks suggested brisk activity. A note dated October 6 from Thomasville claimed the liquor would aid sick people and be given free, asking officers to ignore the still. Police did not heed the plea.
