Jury awards Burns heirs wife $5900 for services rendered

A Superior court jury ruled Annie Burns entitled to $5,900 from L. P. Burns executor of Z A Burns estate for care provided during his decline. The case followed a challenge to a deed by Z A Burns to Annie, later disputed by other heirs. A separate suit by C A and J W Weborn against High Point Lumber Co. yielded $186.16. A new High Point baseball manager Dick Miller was named for the 1920 Piedmont league season. He will oversee hiring and firing, with club officials handling finances. Malcolm R Patterson, former Tennessee governor, spoke at Friends Church on prohibition urging national and world reform.

Frivolous Follies Draws Big Crowd at Junior Class Event

The junior class hosted Frivolous Follies on Friday night with a midway of attractions including Sulava the Orient bearded lady Simaneese Twins and Prof Kanine's dogs. Itchy Koo headlined the show with music and dance while proceeds totaled 35 dollars for the junior class.

Fix R. R. Crossing at Main Street

Southern Railroad under federal management will repair the Main street crossing. Crews will lay two new beds of gravel and asphalt the street on both sides to prevent mud. The project, with material on hand, marks a significant improvement over current conditions.

Phillip Welborn Celebrates 85th Birthday at Home

A surprise dinner for Phillip Welborn at his home four miles north of town gathered relatives from Thomasville and Pants City. Welborn is 85, with Da vid Welborn and a pair of sisters among the attendees. The editor and family visited briefly as the gathering adjourned, noting a cheerful scene.

Status of the Imperator ships remains unresolved in New York

Paris reports the supreme council assured the status of 170000 tons of German ships held by the United States but no action followed. Britain accuses the US shipping board of violating the council pact by delaying turnover after troop transports. British delegates say colonial troop returns are waiting while ships remain in New York harbor.

Treasury Secretary Glass Accepts Virginia Senatorial Post

President Wilson asked Secretary Glass to become the Virginia senator replacing the late Thomas S. Martin. After governor Davis appointed him, Glass asked for the president’s wishes and was told to accept. He will continue as head of the Treasury while awaiting oath.

Wilson leaves for sunlit lawn in chair amid treaty fight

President Wilson was wheeled outside to the south portico lawn where he enjoyed sunlight. Reporters described him as bright and seemingly full of fight after the Senate action on the treaty, marking the first time he has left the White House since returning from the western tour.

Supreme Court Cancels California Oil Land Patents

The government won in the Supreme Court to cancel patents for 6 000 acres in California oil lands valued at about 10 million dollars, alleged to be obtained by fraud by the Southern Pacific Company. A recess is set for December 8. The court will also hear next Thursday appeals on wartime prohibition act cases from New York and Kentucky.

President Wilson to pocket peace treaty over Lodge reservations

Senator Hitchcock reports the president has read the Lodge reservations and will pocket the peace treaty if they are accepted. He says the reservations nullify the treaty and are utterly impossible, and the president will proceed with ratification without reservations, potentially causing a deadlock.

Negro Conference Draws Large Attendance of Ministers

The North Carolina Negro Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church met at Morris Chapel M E Church with about 300 black preachers and workers in attendance. Dr J W E Bowen urged training for ministry and seminaries while Bishop Frank M Bristol presided and delegates were elected to the general conference.
