A Live Wire reports the High Point Kiwanis Club organized with nearly 100 charter members. J. E. Kirkman is president S. L. Davis vice president and Chas. M. Brown secretary and treasurer. The club aims to represent every trade and profession in the city.
Miss Deitz reports High Point business girls raised about 4000 dollars for a Y M C A drive. Many canvassers still submitting reports and factory workers contributions expected to grow total. Citizens and business men largely cooperative though some able donors have not yet given. The effort aims to reach 75000 dollars and pave the way for a High Point Y M C A.
The Oak Hill community gathers in a large open house for Mrs Jane Son, widow of Thomas Son, with 100 guests arriving by car, wagon, and on foot. A long table under sugar maples overflows with meats pies cakes canned goods and bread as Rev C P Goode leads devotional time after a grand meal. Relatives include four children eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren while neighbors and local stores provide gifts and hospitality.
The Dixie Roller Mill burned early Sunday morning causing an estimated $10,000 in damage. John E. Boling, 57, died suddenly Tuesday morning at his East Commerce street home. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. Dewey Hoffman, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Hoffman of Beck Engraving Co Philadelphia, is visiting the city.
Washington visitor Mrs. W. S. Allison and two children stay with Mrs. A. W. Council. Several groups travel to Pisgah or Raleigh for visits. Local moves include the Leakes into a Greensboro High Point highway home. Residents journey to Danville and Richmond for family matters and education.
Rural residents express strong book needs as the American Library Association promotes the Books for Everybody movement. Letters from farmers in Wisconsin Louisiana and Minnesota request titles on productive farming drainage poultry and even fuel alcohol from crops, highlighting gaps in local library service and urging county library expansion and better statewide legislation.
The American Library Association wartime program aided sick and disabled veterans with hospital libraries and home loan services. It supplied books for ex service members in VA and civilian hospitals, including Braille materials for the blinded, and coordinated direct library referrals via ALA War Service for men lacking local access.
Dr EC Brooks Raleigh state superintendent delivered the commencement address at High Point High School praising education’s role in citizenship. He traced schooling from home to public schools and urged local citizens to support schools and lawyers to engage with youth. Rev James Turner of Wake Forest preached the sermon and diplomas were awarded with prize contests the following evening.
John Lee Shoaf carried 31 crates of strawberries and 30 crates of cherries to Winston and sold them for 30 cents a quart. The note also mentions local weather, wheat crops, rising prices, and social visits as well as various local residents and events.
The Salis bury Elks lodge captured the silver loving cup last night making it the trophy’s permanent property under contest rules. About 200 attendees traveled by special train with a band, and full dress parade attire was worn as the lodge claimed a decisive victory.
