UNC Commencement Notes Highlight June Events

Veteran Confederate Walker Heads to Richmond on Foot

In Greens boro a 76 year old Confederate veteran from Georgia named George W. Sheram walked toward Richmond to attend the reunion. He said he travels for fun and will cover about 700 miles reaching the Confederate capital days before the event. He remains hale despite age. The other note states Czar Nicholas of Russia once gave 100,000,000 from his private treasury to Russia's war fund.

City Council Meets Passes Salaries and Plans Cuts

At Tuesday night’s meeting the City Council approved appointments including Carter Dalton as Recorder at 600 dollars annually and T W Albertson as prosecuting attorney at 420 dollars. W C York was named superintendent of waterworks electric lighting and sewers at 200 dollars yearly with a lineman, and the chief of police salary was debated. A pool room license was granted to Clements and Parrish on South Main street. Meat dealers proposed taxes but the plan was scaled to 35 dollars with sanitary regulations pending. The council aims to trench to fund a 2000 dollar city manager salary, but doubts remain about finding qualified cheap labor.

Confederate Built Rail Line Described as Lasting Landmark
