Jubilee Campaign Tops Goal at Local Church

The First Methodist Protestant Church exceeded its one million dollar Jubilee Campaign target with fifteen minutes left, subscribing $6,181 toward a local quota of $4,860. Last Sunday at Net Hotts Creek drew a large attendance. Mrs. Thomas A. Stamey and daughter Della Stamey of Fallston visited W. L. Stamey’s family. Della Stamey, who recently graduated from the Conservatory of Music at Parham, travels home with her mother. The Stamey family operates Stamey Bros. Fallston, Cleveland County’s largest merchants.

Terry Heads High Point Baseball Club Election of Officers

Stockholders of the High Point Baseball Association elected R B Terry president at the Commercial Club meeting. W J Parker became vice president, George R Johnson secretary and W C Idol treasurer with eight directors named. Leakage in gas threatens High Point supply

The North Carolina Public Service Company loses dollars daily due to an uncatalogued leakage in gas mains at its High Point plant. Meter readings for consumption and daily production miss tallies by many feet. Despite efforts by employees and officials, the leak remains unfound. The manager asks citizens detecting the gas odor to report it, warning the escape may pose a menace.

Bank Reports Strong Finances with 4 Million in Resources

The Commercial National Bank's latest statement shows over four million dollars in resources, including nearly a quarter million in Liberty bonds and about one million in vaults and deposits from other banks. It lists $167,000 invested in Guilford County hands and total deposits around $2.483 million, a fine showing.

Miss Mary Wade Bulla has returned from High Point where she received treatment at the High Point Hospital. Miss Lydia Leach and Joseph Johnson were married Saturday evening by Rev. T. Big Johnson at Trinity. The groom is Addison Johnson’s son from near High Point and the bride is William Leach’s daughter. They left for Washington and New York after the ceremony.

High Point Jury Gives Mrs Warrell 1000 Damages

Mrs Warrell sued the city of High Point for injuries when a bridge gave way on August 24 1917. A jury awarded her 1000 damages for injuries from the rotten timber under the bridge while her horse trod a timber and the buggy toppled. Wilson and Parsons spoke for the plaintiff and Dr Dred Peacock for the city.

Wiseman Convicted of First Degree Murder in 1918 Slaying

Aaron Wiseman of McDowell County was found guilty of killing Dr. E A Hennessee at Glen Alpine on January 31 1918. The Pitts brothers were first accused and released at Marion before Wiseman’s later murder conviction in Shelby. Judge B F Long presided over the trial and death sentence was imposed by electric chair.

Men recover victim after fatal motorcycle crash near Thomasville

A party including J. M. Hoover J. H. Pierce and J. E. Pierce found Clarence Hauser dead after a motorcycle accident near the curve by the little white church before Thomasville on April 10 about dark. The companion was unconscious.

A rally of Centenary Workers at Wesley Memorial M E Church drew 60 of 85 workers for a Sunday drive to raise funds. They pledged about $18,000 toward the church’s $32,000 target for a five year campaign, with special music and talks by S. L. Davis F. N. Tate and Rev. J W Lambeth.
