Junior Order of the OYAA Mys Guilford and Mechanicsville Councils met in the Commerce Street hall to mark the 62nd anniversary of the order. Death of Mrs W P Smith in High Point

Mrs W P Smith died Sunday morning at her Russell Street home after several months illness from cancer. Born in Davidson county she was the daughter of the late Geo Hedrick and married to Mr Smith in 1904. She was a member of South Main Street M E church. Funeral at First Reformed church with Rev H C Byrum and Rev L A Peeler. Interment in Oakwood cemetery.

Supt Haynes Re-Elected In City Council Meeting

Friday night the City Council re-elected Supt Thornwell Haynes to a $2,000 yearly salary with one dissenting vote by A. E. Alexander. The board plans retrenchment except in schools, aiming for higher efficiency. Dr. J. T. Burrus urged hospital tax relief, granted unanimously. Col. Wescott Roberson noted bonds require mayor clerk and auditor signatures. J. W. Harris named auditor and J. J. Farriss clerk. An eleventh grade was proposed and more male teachers to raise school standards for college entry. The revenue bill for next year was passed by sections amid school funding debate.

Death of Mr. Briggs in Amesbury and High Point founder

George H. Briggs died at his Amesbury Massachusetts home recently. He founded the North Carolina Wheel Co in this city and moved the plant to High Point in 1902, serving for years as company president. He was active in other High Point enterprises and well regarded by many residents.
