William Lee son of Mr and Mrs W L Smith won first in the mile in five minutes 23% seconds while Howell Albertson took the 440 yard dash. Mr Smith proud of his son’s prowess as spectators note the strong field. Meanwhile in a separate market report over 15 major furniture buyers from chains and large concerns have recently visited the local market and purchased heavily in the last ten days.

High Point easily exceeded its quota for the 5th Liberty Loan campaign, subscribing $607,500. The drive concluded Wednesday night as the city surpassed its fund-raising target through the coordinated support of residents and local organizations.

Fire at Texas Oil plant in Greensboro destroys plant and claims life

A Saturday morning blaze at the Texas Oil Company plant in Greensboro caused extensive damage and a fatality. Authorities believe the plant was blown up with dynamite, triggering multiple terrific explosions and severe destruction.

Corporal Julius Mills Arrives Back Home

Eagle-eged deputy crafts crude still on Sunday

The local deputy known as L Wagner captured his latest contraption in the E T Corbit bottoms. The crude still used a six gallon lard can with a hole cut in the top and a soldered lard bucket cap, a spout through the cap and a funnel inside to catch steam, with an erdinery water pipe as a condenser.

Elks Reception Welcomes Returned Soldiers at Lodge Event

The local Elks lodge hosted a reception for returning soldiers their wives sweethearts and friends drawing about five hundred guests. The receiving line lasted two hours followed by a luncheon and a successful dance. Decorations featured a Statue of Liberty motif and the wording welcomed the soldier boys. Punch was served during arrivals and the overall event reflected true Elk style.

Honoring Memory Dead Soldier of America

Memorial services were held at First Presbyterian Church for Sergeant John Carroll killed in action in France. Chaplain James B. Turner delivered the memorial address as returned soldiers attended. The program included hymns, prayers, scripture, remarks by Captain Massey, a solo by Mrs. Kepharat, and a benediction.

Death of Aged Gentleman on Barker Street

An elderly resident W. Dicks, 73, died Tuesday morning at his Barker street home. A Randolph county native, he leaves a wife and several children. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Marlboro church in Randolph county.

Mrs Hallett Dies. Rites Held In Oakwood Cemetery

Mrs Martha C Hallett, wife of F N Hallett, died Monday morning at her Ward street home in her 40s. She was born in Montgomery county. Funeral services were conducted by Rev H H Robbins and she was interred in Oakwood cemetery. Deceased was well and favorably known.

Red Men Convention Heads North From City

W L Stamey and O R York attend the Great Council session of the Improved Order of Red Men in Gastonia. Building permits in April total about 15000. Memorial Day Plans Tied to Dismantled Guilford Table Co

Notice of dissolution states the partnership between S. F. Wall and E. B. Hutchison trading as the Guilford Table Company has been dissolved by mutual consent.
