Night Fight on English Street Ends in Wounding
A Tuesday night brawl on English near Kennedy Street involved Roma Nalls Harvey Baker Boyd Samuels Earnest Hedgecock Clay Burton and Sidney Bain. Weapons included rocks sticks pistols and a shotgun. Nalls lies in hospital critically wounded Baker seriously hurt Burton lightly wounded. Samuels Hedgecock and Bain fled or were captured, Bain later detained near Mechanicsville. Rhyne Arrested By Chief For Check Fraud And Mortgage Property
Chief Gray returned from Charlotte with W. L. Rhyne a young white man charged with passing a worthless check and disposing of mortgaged property. Rhyne once ran a clothes pressing shop in the city and used club furnishings bought from local merchants as security. He sold the property valued around ninety dollars and fled after giving a seven dollar check to a local restaurant. He was captured near Mount Holly and awaits transfer to High Point. He has prior convictions on both counts but judgment was postponed to next Monday for further review and to allow contact with his kin.
