Congress Called to Meet April 2 in 1917 Extra Session

President Wilson calls Congress to convene in extraordinary session at noon on April 2 1917 at the Capitol Washington. The proclamation states grave questions of national policy require immediate consideration and all members must take notice. Signed March 21 1917.

Charlotte Mayor Urges Citizens to Enroll and Support War Effort

Charlotte, March 21. Mayor T. L. Kilpatrick calls upon every able bodied male citizen of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to enroll at once and bear arms if war comes. Women are asked to volunteer for Red Cross service. Industrial plants should report sacrifices and equipment to the mayor’s office. Public buildings are to display the American flag and all citizens urged to wear the insignia of the country.

Night Fight on English Street Ends in Wounding

A Tuesday night brawl on English near Kennedy Street involved Roma Nalls Harvey Baker Boyd Samuels Earnest Hedgecock Clay Burton and Sidney Bain. Weapons included rocks sticks pistols and a shotgun. Nalls lies in hospital critically wounded Baker seriously hurt Burton lightly wounded. Samuels Hedgecock and Bain fled or were captured, Bain later detained near Mechanicsville. Police report a woman dispute sparked the melee.

Rhyne Arrested By Chief For Check Fraud And Mortgage Property

Chief Gray returned from Charlotte with W. L. Rhyne a young white man charged with passing a worthless check and disposing of mortgaged property. Rhyne once ran a clothes pressing shop in the city and used club furnishings bought from local merchants as security. He sold the property valued around ninety dollars and fled after giving a seven dollar check to a local restaurant. He was captured near Mount Holly and awaits transfer to High Point. He has prior convictions on both counts but judgment was postponed to next Monday for further review and to allow contact with his kin.

Lumberman Crook Missing From Charlotte Hotel

J E Crook of New London disappears from a Charlotte hotel on March 1. Police say he is 42, of good habits, and believe his mind is unbalanced. A recent picture of him appeared in several state papers.

High Point People in Auto Accident

A Sunday afternoon crash on the Greensboro High Point highway near Armfield's store left Mrs. John H. Shaw with leg injuries and three male occupants shaken. The Saxon touring car struck an embankment on a curve, not overturning. Mrs. Shaw was treated in High Point and later shown not to have a broken leg. The injured were Mrs. Shaw, Mr. Shaw, E. A. Patterson, Miss Carrie Campbell, and Jimmie Sneed. Dr. S. S. Coe attended the scene.

Negro Held For Serious Crime In North Carolina Case

Charles Crews, claiming he was unsure of his race, stood in court facing miscegenation and bigamy charges after secretly marrying a white widow here and previously a colored wife in Senior. He pled guilty, bond set at 500 each, with April term to follow. Judge Dred Peacock condemned interracial marriage as felony and warned on home safety.
