Chief of Police McGhee arrested Gus McKinney alias John Steele, wanted in Gastonia for a 1910 murder. The capture occurred in eastern city. Sheriff Davis of Gaston county retrieved the suspect Sunday morning after the withdrawn reward.

Death of Edward Farriss Drops Heavy on Washington Community

Washington citizens mourn the sudden deaths of Edward H. Farriss and his father in law E K Willis within hours of each other. German Submarine Sunk After Ram By Ariel

London report says the German submarine U-20 was rammed today by the British torpedo destroyer Ariel and sank. The crew surrendered and were saved. The U-12 was later identified as the sunken submarine instead of U-20.

British Collier Beethoven Sunk in Baltic Report

Berlin dispatch cites Rotterdam report that the British collier Beethoven traveling from Newcastle to Gibraltar was sunk by torpedo or mine. Two crew members reportedly drowned while the rest were saved.

Lights On Last Night On South Side

The white way lights on the south side were turned on producing an attractive display. Posts blocking the view will be removed and the main street will look markedly better. The globes are pretty but provide weak illumination. doubling candle power would improve brightness at higher cost. The light gives a soft mellow glow pleasing to the eye.
