Bonds Fail to Carry in High Point Votes

The High Point bond issue of 50 000 to pave streets failed in Tuesday’s election with 359 votes for and 494 against, while 311 registered voters did not cast ballots. The defeat is blamed on disfranchisement under a state law and higher tax concerns, with the Third Ward seen as pivotal.

Confederate Veterans Honor falls with McPherson dies at 74

The Confederate Veterans Department notes the Saturday meeting will name reunion delegates and record members. Alexander McPherson of Morris Street died Sunday morning at 74 from angina pectoris. his funeral was led by Rev. A. G. Dixon. He served as a Confederate soldier and was a High Point Camp No. 1682 member. pallbearers were camp members. Surviving daughters and brothers listed. services drew large attendance. Also reported are two marriages: Grace Gurley to William Horney and Eunice Thacker to W F Williard, officiated by Rev. A G Dixon.

Mrs. Martitia Gregson wife of Rev Amos Gregson died at home in Spero Sunday at age 79. Stag Patrol of the Boy Scouts met at the home of Chas McAnally on South Main Street. A debate on which is more important the eyes or ears drew interest with Paul Stamey and Chas McAnally for the affirmative and Dewey Dodameade and Hal Reynolds for the negative. the judges ruled for the affirmative. New officers named include Robert Marshall treasurer Royster Tucker assistant Paul Stamey secretary and Hall Reynolds assistant. Refreshments were served. The next meeting will be with Scout Julian Les with a debate on which is more important the first or second troupe with Paul Stamey and Roy Gilliam for the affirmative and Dewey Dodameade and Chas McAnally for the negative.

D Mood Welborn died at his home near Trinity from pneumonia last week. He was 39, survived by his wife Royas, his mother Mrs Roxie Welborn, seven children, three brothers John S G G and J L Welborn two sisters Mrs D A Thornberry and Mrs Clay Jones, and many relatives. In the records court on Saturday Bill Suggs and Andy Courtney, two young Black youths, were charged with rocking and dispossessing Clarence Witcher of his wagon. They were fined, released due to age, and warned to stop their criminal actions or face harsher consequences next time.

February crime roundup in recorder's court notes

Sixty six cases were tried in recorder's court with 58 convictions. Four defendants were sentenced to the roads. Fines totaled 160 dollars and costs nearly 500 dollars were collected. Most convictions stemmed from old liquor. Other cases involved beating board bills trains larceny embezzlement carrying concealed weapons and related offenses.

Verdict Awarded $10,000 in Shropshire Death Suit

The two weeks' civil term of the Superior Court adjourned with a verdict for Mrs. Mary J. Gurley as administratrix of Samuel Shropshire against the Southern Power Company. Shropshire drowned in a pool at the company's High Point station on May 30, 1915. Damages awarded were $10,000. appeal to the Supreme Court.
