A six thousand strong crowd on Main Street High Point cheered soldiers bound for service in the United States. Capt Dallas Zellicoffer spoke, Dr Dred Peacock delivered a patriotic address, and Dr G T Rowe led a prayer as townsfolk lined the route and boosted the relief fund before the soldiers departed.
The Baracca classes of Wesley Memorial M E Church will send each member of Company M High Point soldiers a pocket testament to carry to Mexico.
An alarm reported a fire on Tuesday morning in the second story of the Redding building occupied by Mrs Grace Kephart. The blaze started at an awning window, a woman on the third floor brought water to slow the flames until Chief Inma arrived and used a chemical to control the fire.
Company M of the North Carolina National Guard gave a good showing at Camp Glenn in Morehead City. Of 104 men, 18 failed the rigid examination, and the unit expects to be sent to the border soon. Current address is Company M, NCNG, Camp Glenn, NC.
Southern Railway will run an excursion to Atlantic City New Jersey on July 6 with return validity of 15 days on any regular train. Fares from Iron High Point 1200 and Thomas Ville 1250 include access to notable seaside resorts. Walter Beavans of Endfield visits his brother W C Beavans.
High Point will host a new Morris plan bank with capital of $40,000 as Salisbury Asheville and Spencer already operate such banks. E Mendenhall will be secretary and Robert Morrow treasurer. The plan offers small loans to moderate earners with 6 percent interest and weekly 2 percent repayment, no deposits or liabilities, and a $1 collateral investigation fee.
The editor and his family plus an aunt visited the Dodson family near Pilot Mountain on Saturday, encountering mostly good roads but some sticky red mud. Grandma Belzorah Stamey, 88, lives nearby with the late P F W Stamey's mother. The group attended church and heard a practical sermon. Local farmers are improving with scientific methods, aided by good roads, schools, churches, and free mail delivery. Dodson runs a creamery and benefits from poultry and eggs.

Henry Phagan aged 13 fell from a bicycle Tuesday morning suffering a concussion. Dr. F R Taylor attended. The cause of the hard fall is not known and the boy is in a dangerous condition.

Chas Willis killed a large blue crane near his fish pond on Monday. The bird measured 6 1 2 feet long and 5 1 2 feet high with a beak of 8 3 4 inches, one of the largest cranes in the area. Willis keeps thousands of bass in the pond and the crane was feeding on his fish. 2,000 more bass were recently added to the pond.

The Thomasville Orphanage annual meeting draws big crowds.
West Virginia officers arrested Will Spencer, colored, sought in Rawley county Virginia for the sheriff and two deputies murder during an election riot on June 7. He had been at a local factory. Jake Williams, colored, tipped off officers for a $50 reward. Thirty four arrests in the case to date.
The 1916 Chautauqua in High Point opened after a lively parade led by Elm Wraittman Parade Chief Gray and Officer Evans. The Springfield band fueled the march as Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scouts, Sailors, Red Cross Nurses, Woman's Club, Dutch Colony, fire wagons, and cars followed in holiday colors.
