A grand outdoor pageant Through the Centuries will be presented July 20 and 21 in High Point. Sponsored by the YWCA, it will feature about 700 women over fourteen, with hundreds more in service roles. Miss Youne directs as enlistments continue and rehearsals begin at multiple city venues.
Wachovia Bank and Trust Co of Winston-Salem purchases the Bank of Commerce with its six story building. Wachovia will take over the business soon and operate it as a High Point branch, consolidating banking in the city.
James T Mendenhall a prominent farmer living near the city died Thursday morning at his home. He is survived by his wife one son and three daughters. Funeral services were held at Zion Church Friday at 11 a m conducted by the church pastor. Interment followed in the church burying grounds.
The High Point area sees major property transfers with deeds filed Friday. Notable transactions include a $17 000 Main Street parcel tied to Wharton Realty and several other lots and lots transfers in High Point and Guiford County, with various exec and insurance companyrelated conveyances and prices ranging up to multiple thousands.
J Mercer Barnett of Birmingham was elected president of the Kiwanis International at the closing session of the annual convention here. Cleveland won next year’s convention. Portland, June 1 Miss Lelia Pell a stenographer at the Red Book agency is taking a 10 day vacation with her parents near Ramseur.
The grand jury deems a local Guilford County home a disgrace to the county and orders immediate remedial action to fix the conditions.
A government convoy of motor trucks rolled through here on Wednesday as part of a trans continental tour. The sight drew interest from local residents and officials alike.
Dr J J Hamlin and Fred G Barbee battled in municipal court after a North Main street altercation. Barbee was found guilty of affray, fined 15 dollars plus costs. Hamlin was discharged. Other minor cases, including speeding and non support, were continued to June 21.
Roy Alford and Eugene Alford, jailed in Guilford County, await trial for the June 8 murder of J. E. Fletcher, a city merchant. Judge P A McElroy granted a continuance to permit further investigation and to gather additional evidence as the case moves to the next term.
Oak Hill west of High Point announces a community play titled Some Ties to be performed by nine actors on Saturday evening June 26 at 7 45. Cast includes Mrs R S Russell Miss Ruth Anderson Miss Alma Ward Miss Zelma Burton Miss Letha Kennedy Ralph Wright William Payne Clyde Payne and Verna Burton. Mary Sherrod returns to the city from May 26 trip and visits Miss Laura Millerand in High Point after attending Goucher College commencement and related festivities in Baltimore and Philadelphia.
Tom Johnson, a Black resident of Greensboro, was found guilty in superior court for a crime involving a young white married woman. The jury took just 15 minutes to convict and the judge sentenced him to die in the electric chair on August 20. Defense attorney H L Klontz sought to quash the verdict and pursue an appeal, but the court granted 40 days to prepare. Johnson admitted visiting the house on the date of the crime, harming his alibi defense.
Clyde Murphy, a young High Point man, pleaded guilty in Superior court to larceny and false pretense and received 18 months on the county roads. His brother Fred Murphy pleaded guilty to attempted larceny with judgment continued upon costs and $80 for auto damage. Two other High Point youths, Jim McLeod and Jesse Brittain, charged with breaking a house, had their cases moved to juvenile court.
High Point canvassers report confidence in securing 100000 dollars in subscriptions to launch the High Point Housing Corporation efforts. Three teams are canvassing door to door seeking pledges to address the city’s housing shortage and begin operations promptly once the funds are raised.
Mayor D. A. Stanton attends the State Association of Mayors session in Raleigh as North Carolina city executives discuss municipal problems. He said the conference should shed light on issues causing worry for mayors and officials statewide.
J Lindsay Gallimore 30, an Erlanger Mill employee from Lexington, drowned in Abbott's Creek about a mile east of the city Thursday afternoon. Divers recovered his body two hours later. he swam with companions and sank without a struggle. He leaves a wife and three children, son of George Gallimore of High Point. Reports note multiple creek fatalities in recent years nearby.
The planned June cut over to the automatic telephone system has been postponed until late July due to an unexpected delay in shipment of essential apparatus.
High Point notes arrivals and departures of residents and guests from Winston-Salem Charlotte and Asheboro. Longtime residents and newlyweds return from trips to New York Niagara Falls and Goldsboro. Legal cases in Superior Court include A T Long’s ten month sentence for automobile theft and pleas in other larceny and liquor cases.
Miss Young announces an outdoor pageant titled Through the Centuries with episodes from primitive women to the modern era. The show requires about 200 participants for at least one episode and will begin rehearsals next week. Women over fourteen may enlist at the Chamber of Commerce with contact details and preferred episodes.
High Point lodge of Elks No 1155 plans to attend the Grand Lodge sessions in Chicago July 5 to 10. Local members seek a private car for the trip and many plan side trips to Canada or stays in Chicago to sightsee.
Deputy J E Wagner and Officer D W Martin caught a 65 gallon copper still near Prospect church close to Old Trinity at 11 PM. The still had been in operation recently, with a hot mash in the cylinder. They seized the entire apparatus and transported it to High Point and Greensboro for destruction as darkness limited arrests. This marked Wagner's twenty sixth still capture with no liquor found.
B N Allen and Gilbert W Clark returned Friday from Asheville where they attended the State convention of merchants associations. Harold Horrox also attended and returned home. The Greensboro meeting will host the next convention with reports from associations statewide read and greeted with enthusiasm. Asheville venues and Grove Park Inn were highlighted during the stay. Battery Park convention hall hosted the event.
The Greensboro Daily News reports Ella Arnold Lambeth of Thomasville will wed W. H. Rankin Jr. of Charlotte in October. An accomplished daughter of Old Salem she studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and has wide statewide friends. Rankin is UNC and Harvard educated with faculty posts at UNC and Columbia.
At Aberdeen on June 17 Lieut Gov O Max Gardner spoke to a large crowd introducing his bid for North Carolina governor. Henry A Page condemned Cameron Morrison as unsuitable and aligned with the political machine while Gardner claimed nonpartisan aims and broad backing from Simmons Kitchin and Clark supporters.
Albert Byerly of Thomasville identified the dead white youth found near White Oak school as his son Newell Byerly, 16, a cabinet worker. The body, discovered beside the Southern railway tracks about 11 PM Friday, was taken to Thomasville for burial. Relatives include father, mother, a brother, four sisters, and an uncle in Greensboro. Authorities suspect accidental death from a fall or jump from a moving southbound train Friday night.
William C. Hammer Democratic candidate for Congress wires James Leak campaign manager for Walter E. Brock praising his rival’s unselfish support. Hammer expects to resign U S district attorney post late July or early August, with W C Newlands named as probable successor and Senator Overman holding final appointment authority. Brock, who ran second in the primary, will not run in a second primary.
