Haynes Resigns to Lead Birmingham College

Thornwell Haynes, High Point superintendent since 1911, resigns effective June 24 to become president of Birmingham College on July 1. The Age-Herald reports broad support from Birmingham trustees and Alabama educators, praising his diplomacy, education work, and Methodist faith. local reaction notes his departure will leave High Point.

Marr Named New Superintendent of Pittsburgh Point Schools

Prof W M Marr principal of South Main Street school was elected superintendent of Pittsburgh Point schools to succeed Thornwell Haynes who becomes Birmingham college president. Marr is 28, native of Bryson City, Trinity College graduate, with prior posts as Waynesville high principal and Elizabeth City science teacher.

Germany Reports British Navy Losses Exceed 600000 Tons

Berlin reports via Overseas agency that British naval losses in the war total over 600,000 tons. It cites 11 battleships 15 armored cruisers and 11 other cruisers lost to date plus 30 torpedo boats 20 torpedo craft and submarines for additional 460000 tons, with Skagerrak battle raising totals beyond 600000 tons.
