Submarine Raids Off New Jersey Coast Kills Sailors and Ships

German U boats attacked off the New Jersey coast sinking eleven merchant vessels and a steamer. About 300 lives are believed lost as two large submarines the U 37 and U 151 prowled the area. Allied ships and aircraft are actively pursuing the subs. In other news Dixie Griffith and Worth Ivey of Matton Drug Co are overseas in aviation units. Serget Stamey reports arrival at a foreign port with the 60th brigade 30th division 115th machine gun battalion.

Judge Upholds City License Refusal for Meat Market

Judge Adams rules in Davidson county that the Davidson city council lawfully refused W. C. McIntire a South Main meat market license. Rejections followed three reconsideration denials, mandamus proceedings filed, officials notified, and papers sent to Mason W. Gant in Greensborough. McIntire plans appeal, not to reach the Supreme Court until November due to district scheduling.

General Pershing reports that northwest of Chatteau Thierry American and French troops disrupted an enemy southward advance through Neuilly woods and forced a retreat. A German battalion at Jaulgonne was counterattacked and pushed back to the right bank on the Marne front with heavy losses.
