Fatal drowning at Wrightsville Beach tragic two deaths

Miss Anne Burkheimer 23 of Charlotte drowned in Banks Channel at Wrightsville Beach while bathing. Don Kirkman of High Point died attempting to rescue her. Judson Barber helped pull Burkheimer ashore but she died. Kirkman, recently returned from overseas, remains missing. Funeral held at Wesley Memorial Church.

Little Girl Killed by Street Car No 43

Florence Elizabeth Stadiem five years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Morris Stadiem was instantly killed Thursday evening at 7 o'clock when struck by street car number 43 of the North Carolina Public Service company on South Elm. Motorman C E Ellington tried to stop but the car dragged the body 33 feet across brick pavement. The child was crossing from Walker avenue toward Odell Hardware company store. Ellington was held on $2500 bond for a preliminary hearing likely Monday. No inquest was ordered.

Typhoid Fever Costs North Carolina Half Million This Month

The state health officer estimates typhoid fever in July will cost about five hundred thousand dollars in illness alone with deaths not yet counted. Through the first half of July 332 cases were reported statewide led by Durham and Wake counties. Vaccination grants immunity for two to four years and sanitation is urged to prevent further losses.

Gas attack at Durham Hosiery mill injures worker

Reece Williams, a bleacher at the Durham Hosiery mills, was gassed Monday afternoon while repairing a machine. A nine inch stream of chlorine under high pressure struck him in the face. He was taken to his home in serious condition. Also noted: High Point won a spring game 2 to 1 on Friday. Mrs. Isaac Fiddler left the hospital last week.

The High Point Underwear Co. enlarges to 24,000 workshirts daily by August 1. The second floor gains more cutting tables and the plant becomes a central distributing point for a major shirt maker. Big Sum for Good Roads in Davidson Randolph Forsyth
