Shifter Engine Catches Fire Damaging Steam Engine

Early Sunday the shifting engine No 1676 near High Point Furniture Co plant caught fire and suffered heavy woodwork loss and damaged gauges and appliances. Firemen arrived and fought the blaze as flames spread from a draft opened door increasing the damage, with losses estimated in the hundreds.

Auxiliary Organized at Morris Chapel M. E. Church

An auxiliary of the Red Cross was organized Sunday afternoon at Morris' Chapel M. E. church, colored, with Rev. G. T. Rowe and Miss Clara Cox assisting. About 100 Black attendees joined. Dr. G. A. Gerran was named chairman, Carrie Davis vice-chairman, and Prof. E. E. Curtright secretary and treasurer.

Doings of City Council in Bond Financed Improvements

Tuesday night the city council approved nearly 500 thousand dollars in bond issues for current and future improvements. A bond expert outlined costs over eleven years with ten years for property owners to pay, funded by taxes if needed. Other items included street work, water boil advisory, gas sterilizing tank, and a new underground gasoline reservoir. The council also named the Board of Health and set contractors to sample Centennial avenue work.

Death of Mrs James C. Martin at High Point home

Aged Mrs James C. Martin died at her daughter Mrs J P Redding's home on West Broad Street after residing in High Point since 71875. Born August 21 1829 in Milton Connecticut she leaves one child Mrs J P Redding. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 4 PM with Archdeacon Hardin of Salisbury and Rev G T Rowe officiating. interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Good Woman Dead Mary C Thacker Dies After Illness Near City

Mrs Mary C Thacker wife of C H Thacker died Sunday morning at her home four miles northeast of the city after a lingering illness. She was 67 and survived by husband three sons and three daughters all of this city. The remains were taken to Milton and funeral services were held at New Hope church the following morning conducted by Rev J H Earnhardt.
