The author and family visit Moore's Springs enjoying the hotel views water quality claim, music, amusements and camping with about 250 guests. They describe mountain roads, routes through Quaker Gap and Rural Hall return via Walnut Cove Walkertown and Kernersville arriving home tired and ready for another trip.

Chickasaw Tribe No. 32 Honors and Installs Leaders

At a July meeting incoming Sachem A C Staley presented a gold ring to C of R York for bringing in the most accepted applications in six moons. July 14 installations by Deputy B H Bradner included Prophet D F Lopp, Sachem A C Staley, Sr Sagamore J D Atkins, Jr Sagamore Dallas Zollicoffer, Wigwam Keeper W H Kaney, Trustee C A Lewis. Other officers remained. A July banquet praised members as the tribe posted a net gain of about forty for the term.

The Cotton Crop Outlook Report

The Census Bureau reports next year’s prospective cotton crop at 12,000,000 bales, 3,000,000 fewer than last year, a 22 percent drop. This year’s acreage totals 31,535,000 acres, down 5,871,000 acres or 15.6 percent. The crop condition improves versus last year, especially in this state.

Russia Sinks 59 Turkish Ships In One Day

London reports a fleet of 59 Turkish sailing vessels laden with war material for the Turkish army of the Caucasus was destroyed by Russian torpedo boat destroyers. The crews were captured, with prisoners taken.

Lightning strikes picker room at Pickett Cotton Mills

Tuesday afternoon storm caused a fire in the picker room at Pickett Cotton Mills. Firemen arrived quickly and limited damage to burning some lint. Soldiers headed Monday night for Camp Glenn at Morehead City for annual encampment. Wishing Capt. Zollicoffer and his men a good trip.

Tomatoes Growers on Steele and Pine Streets

Joe Kirkman on Steele street and Will Smith on Pine street raised fine tomato crops. Each produced several fruits weighing two pounds and measuring 16 to 18 inches in circumference. Mr Smith sold tomatoes worth about 30 dollars from his garden. Can you beat this on tomatoes.

Death of Mrs. C. A. Vick in Trinity

Mrs. C. A. Vick died at her Trinity home Saturday from pellagra. Survived by husband and six children led by Cyrus, the eldest, who serves as chief clerk at the freight depot. Husband and father is critically ill. Sympathies of friends are extended.

Last Sunday a tireless automobile party reached Piedmont Springs exhausted. Mrs Stamey fell to nervous indigestion but Mr Saunders of Winston and his wife helped, providing poultices and medicine from their summer cottage. The act touched all, proving genuine brotherly kindness beyond lodge labels.

Horrible Automobile Accident Claims Father and Two Children

Hickory July 18 report says Belton C. Shuford manager of Brookford cotton mill store was seriously injured and his two children Carl age five and Ruth age three killed when their automobile at a crossing near Longview was struck by passenger train No 12. Mrs Shuford and two other women were slightly hurt.

Good Things Planned By Merchants Association

At a regular meeting Tuesday night the Merchants Association announced pay-up week from July 31 to August 7 to urge members to settle accounts for a good rating. A basket picnic at High Rock is scheduled for August 19 with a special train, and doors will close each Thursday afternoon through September 16. Two new members joined, decorations planned for the Red Men convention in November, aiming to bring ex Governor Cole Blease and other prominent Red Men to town.
