Germans Reach Marne In Major Offensive Across Front

After a 33 day pause Germans renew drive from Chateau Thierry to Massiges and east of Rheims. They cross the Marne at multiple points while American troops engage and counter attack along a 65 mile front. French reports say losses are small and guns remain with allies.

French Counter Attacks Halt German Gains in Marne Offensives

Paris reports say German troops threw fresh forces into the Marne front with attacks along all lines. French counter attacks retook ground in the Bouquigny woods and Courton forest while German assaults near Rheims and Prunay failed. German losses are tallied around 700,000 to date with high casualties.

Kennedy Dies at Home at 79. Rites Thursday

Olin S. Kennedy of this city died Tuesday night at 9 30. He was 79 and longtime resident. Survived by wife and five children. Funeral set Thursday at 3 pm from Pleasant Grove church with burial in Pleasant Grove cemetery.

Americans Repulse German Offensive East of Rheims

Dispatches report the German attack along the Marne and near Rheims largely failed. American forces conducted a counterattack on a German salient and disrupted their advance with heavy machine gun and infantry fire, forcing retreats at multiple points. A courier pigeon for the enemy was shot down east of Chateau Thierry.

Son of Ex-President Killed in French Air Battle

Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt youngest son of former President Roosevelt was killed in action in France near Chateau Thierry. He flew 13 American aircraft in a mission and shot down seven Germans before two enemy planes turned on him. His mother and Col Theodore Roosevelt expressed pride in his service.

President Signs War Wire Control Resolution

President Wilson today signed a measure authorizing him to take over and operate telegraph, telephone, cable and radio lines for the duration of the war. The act grants centralized control over communications nationwide.

Exemption Board Accepts 37 New Registrants in Draft

The exemption board examined 46 men today and accepted 37 as new registrants in class one awaiting general service. Of those accepted 27 were white and 10 were negro, with names including Joseph A. North Carolina deputy insurance commissioner W. A. Scott inspected downtown buildings and condemned the old Jarre Hotel as a fire trap.
