Machine Works Suffers Fire Damage at Plant

Fire struck the High Paint Machine works damaging the building in an unknown origin. Estimated loss runs around several hundred dollars though the plant will not halt operations pending repairs into Tuesday.

Noah Motsinger Dies At Wallburg At Age Seventy Nine

Noah Motsinger died at his home one mile west of Wallburg on Wednesday July 9 after a period of ill health. Heart failure listed as the cause. He leaves two sons J B and J B Motsinger of Wallburg, three daughters and several siblings and grandchildren. He was a prosperous farmer and a longtime Wallburg resident and member of Wallburg Baptist church. Age 79 years and about six months. A supper at Henry Reids on the Wallburg road next Saturday night. Wheat threshing and dry weather affect crops tobacco outlook poor. Speculation on sugar noted. Editor notes we are waiting.

Court Defines Automobile Operation Policy In City Court

Judge A O Kirkman in munici pal court Tuesday morning defined the policy of the court and police in enforcing every statute governing automobile operation. He said no person, regardless of class, has special privilege to exceed the speed limit, and intends to place funds on all convicted of automobile law violations including speed and license violations.

Senator probes bias in military pay for wounded

Washington July 15 Senator Simmons raised a complaint of discrimination in favor of wounded regular army officers and soldiers over those in the reserve or national army regarding pay and compensation. He contacted the director of the bureau of war risk insurance to draft an amendment to equalize benefits, potentially granting reserve casualties the same retired pay as the regular army.

The committee with the City Council met this morning to discuss condemnation proceedings against the Hoskins land for water works. A special committee will decide today and share the ruling, after which either party may appeal if desired.

Killing in Randolph County shocks Mount Gilead area

Ed Farlow is dead and Marvin Harris is jailed in Randolph County after a fatal shooting near Mount Gilead church twelve miles south of the city. The motive cited is a mule trade dispute over a $2.50 cash difference. Harris reportedly fired a shotgun through the door after Farlow moved toward a hip pocket. Harris, once known for mental depression, is held without bail as authorities investigate the homicide. Farlow was a respected singing teacher in the Mt Gilead community.
