Lieutenant H. B. Hiatt of the Hospital Corps and Lieutenant Billy Armstrong of Company M recently visited to recruit for their units. Both reported strong responses as the local men rallied to the calls with notable enthusiasm and success.

Death of Jesse J Gray at two miles west of High Point

Jesse J Gray died last week at his home two miles west of High Point from pleurisy after a two month illness. He was 31, a son of G W Gray, a prosperous farmer, and a member of the Junior Order Sons and Daughters of Liberty. Funeral services were held from Fairview on Friday afternoon with large attendance from his orders.

Fisticuff Entangles Brooks and Armfield Over Account

E C Brooks insurance agent and W F Armfield clashed Thursday over an account. Brooks took the brunt of blows, a few injuries noted, then both separated. Brooks posted 16 bond but did not appear. Armfield fined five dollars and costs. Fannie Osborne received four months on the roads for disobedience to moral law, with disorderly conduct dismissed on costs and an appeal filed.

Branching Out to Larger Quarters in High Point

The McLellan store moves from the Peacock building to the W D Simmons building causing vacancies for Amos Furniture Co and Gilmer Bros. McLellan to take possession Sept 1 and overhaul the building for its new store. Kress plans a large South Main building next to McLellan site, ready by September. The move places McLellan farther from Kress to align with street position.

Big Labor Day celebration planned for Greensboro to High Point road

A Labor Day event will celebrate the completed Greensboro to High Point concrete road with a county dinner and program. The Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and High Point Commercial Club will organize, inviting all county residents, with Greensboro asked to raise 250 dollars for expenses.

George H. Royster of Greensboro fell seriously ill while visiting relatives in Granville county. He was brought home Sunday after his condition stabilized briefly and remained of concern.

Albertto Mincado a former Carranza lieutenant who deserted rather than risk duty against his adopted country failed the physical requirements for U S Marine Corps at the Newark recruiting station. Recorder's Court Finances Show Strong First Half

The recorder's court reports a self sustaining six month period with total income and costs of 205.99. February leads with fines 117.50 and costs 37 amounting to 494.04. May is weakest month with fines 37.50 and costs 187.12 totaling 224.62.

Eye Fixers In Session Of North Carolina Optometric Society

The North Carolina Optometric Society met Monday in the ninth session with President W. H. Leonard of Salisbury presiding. Vice Mayor S. L. Davis delivered a welcoming address, followed by a response from Frank M. Jolly of Raleigh. The gathering adjourned to meet next year in Raleigh. Local Farmer Soloman Payne Dies At Home

Soloman Payne aged unknown died Sunday at his home two miles west of the city. Survived by his wife three daughters Mrs J R Welch Mrs Lee Montsinger and Mrs Chas Clinard a brother Joseph Payne and two picked Mrs Emeline Hayworth and Mrs Grace Spurgeon. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church. Funeral services held Monday afternoon at Abbott's church conducted by Elders Davis and Ashburn.

Moon and Sun Eclipses Visible This Month

North Carolinians may view a partial moon eclipse on the night of July 14 15 about 80 percent of the moon shaded by Earth's shadow in High Point around 9 30 p m weather permitting. The sun eclipse on July 29 will be annular with the sun and moon in a near alignment reducing the moon to a rim around the sun.

The Western Union Telegraph Company seeks boys over fourteen to deliver telegrams. The notice notes voting bonds for streets and a requirement to pay about half the cost of street repairs, a plan described as inconsistent.
