Patriotism and Heroism Remembered in Community Service Event

A Sunday afternoon gathering honored two local fallen soldiers, Privates Geo. C. Wright and Henry Traynham, with a Red Cross tribute and a benediction. Speakers praised Wright’s patriotism and Traynham’s sacrifice, as residents sang the Star Spangled Banner and charity cards urged support for Red Cross relief efforts worldwide. Resolutions of respect were read by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Five German U Boats Sent to Bottom

Atlantic port reports how British transports and American and British destroyers, safeguarding convoys, destroyed five German submarines in European waters. Passengers aboard an English liner observed torpedoing of the Orissa, a Brill freight ship, and depth charges from an American destroyer hit a submarine. Gunners from the liner and a British destroyer claimed further submarine sinks as fog hindered visibility and additional depth charges and shellfire claimed the remaining U boats.

Lieut. Col. J. T. Burrus now stationed at Alexandria La spent several days in the city with Mrs Burrus and daughter Iris last week. Formerly a popular local physician and manager of High Point Hospital he received major's rank before duty and was recently elevated in rank on his way back to command after a business trip to Washington.

Funeral of Clifford T. Burke in Greensboro

Funeral services for Clifford T. Burke were held at his parents’ home on Green Street after a brief pneumonia illness. The Rev. James W. Rose and Rev. J. A. Clarke officiated. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

Disaster after Nashville rail collision kills many

In Nashville Tennessee July 9 a wreck involving Nashville and Chattanooga and St. Louis trains No 1 and No 4 west of Nashville killed at least 25 to 35 with 50 to 75 injured, mainly African American passengers. Six coaches were destroyed and two No 1 cars burned. crews and volunteers rescued the injured as officials assessed the disaster.

Well Known Randolph County Man Admitted To High Point Hospital

W F McCrary a senior Randolph County resident and Ashboro father of D B McCrary is reported seriously ill and admitted to a High Point hospital for treatment. He is 76 and has long been a prominent local figure with deep ties in Ashboro and Trinity. His son remains at his bedside.

The Vera Philathea class of the M. P. Church Mechaniceville held its monthly meeting at Mrs Ida Guyer’s home. Funeral of City’s Well Known Negro Resident Held Today

Green Bowman a respected local janitor of the post office building died after a short illness. His funeral was held from the negro Methodist church this afternoon at 3 o clock with a large crowd in attendance.
