Bond election called by City Council challenges August vote

The High Point City Council met and scheduled a second bond election for August 15 seeking $50,000 for streets, a measure previously defeated on March 7. Registration is open until August 5. Also noted were land purchase plans for the disposal plant, staff costs, teaching appointments, and firemen’s travel funds. the council agreed to take over the Parkway sewer line.

Rating Book Aims to Rate Merchants and Patrons

A rating book is distributed to each member of the merchants association and to nearly every buyer who pays on time. Merchants are numbered and patrons are rated by how they meet their bills. Ratings use A for prompt pay and C for slow.

Fourth of July excursion to High Rock notables noted

A large crowd traveled to High Rock for the Fourth by train and car. Welch Memorial led an excursion and Trophy Council Jr. QO U A M participated. High Pointer travelers included W C Denny family, Mrs Carl Hill and children, John Wilborn party, the editor and family, and others. The day featured fishing, ferry visits, and rock-climbing along the Yadkin. The report also notes the North Carolina troops will stay together on the border per the President's instruction to Governor Craig.

The W C T U held its annual social at Wesley Memorial M E Church led by first vice president Mrs J E Kirkman due to the president's absence. Members paid dues at the desk. A Peace contest by the Loyal Temperance Legion is set for Greene Street Baptist Church Sunday at 8 PM. Refreshments followed the adjournment.

North Carolina Troops to Encamp at El Paso Texas

Camp Glenn July 2 reports the first regiment headed to El Paso with rumors settled. Four companies of the first regiment were mustered into national service. figures show high point and Asheville units strong while Winston-Salem lags in enlistment. An incident involved a 17 year old recruit in a yellow cheese cloth ordeal.

Seven Electrocutions in State Scheduled for July

Seven executions are set in Raleigh in July with one on August 1 unless clemency alters the list. Two white men, Melvin Horne of Wilmington and Frank Foster of Polk County, face death for murder, with Horne seeking insanity clemency not yet decided.
