High Point Merchants Unite for War Stamp Banquet

High Point merchants gathered for an oyster banquet and speeches to boost the sale of war and thrift stamps, conserve manpower, and strengthen the Merchants Association. Leaders highlighted unity, patriotism, and efficient deliveries while pledges were signed and a two hundred thousand dollar sales goal set for the area.

A colored man known as Jesse James was shot and killed Thursday night at Theodore Matthews’s home in Congregation Row. Matthews was jailed after a preliminary hearing, charged with killing James, a one legged man, who identified himself and was shot through the door with a 38 caliber pistol.
