Merchants Banquet Tonight Promotes Co operation

The Merchants Association holds a big banquet tonight at the Confederate veterans hall on North Main street. Speakers include John Paul Lucas of Raleigh an executive secretary of the United States Food Administration J Norman Wi of Greensboro and J Frank Morris of Winston. The government requires merchant cooperation and attendance is urged to avoid losses.

Death of Mrs. Mary Caton in 81st year

Mr and Mrs H A Oakes returned from Advance after attending the funeral of Mrs Mary Caton sister of the late Sheriff W A Bailey of Davie county. She leaves two daughters Mrs R P Shermer Advance and Mrs D D Timmons Morristown, one sister Mrs Susan Williams and 28 grandchildren. Burial at old Shady Grove churchyard in inclement weather with services by Rev Brindle. She was nearly 81 years old.

Sugar and flour purchase limits under penalty

A local rule imposes a 35,000 fine or two years imprisonment or both for buying over 15 pounds of sugar and 100 pounds of flour at a time. In the country the limit is 10 pounds of sugar instead of five.

Death of Young Man Folwell Williard

Folwell Williard of Route 2 died last week from pneumonia. The remains were interred at Abbott's Creek Friday in a Primitive Baptist ceremony led by his uncle Elder P. W. Williard and his father. Born December 4, 1888, he married Eunice Thacker on March 1, 1916. Survived by wife, parents, and sister Mrs. Frank Armfield. He was well known and esteemed.

Craven Placed Under $1,000 Bond

Jasper Craven a 20 year old white youth from Shady Grove was arrested near Teaguetown and jailed on charges of stealing 2290 from David Hedgecock. He had a preliminary hearing at Trinity and was placed under a $1000 bond for Randolph County Superior Court in Asheboro. Craven reportedly fainted upon hearing the verdict and feared his father would not post bond. The prior report noted Hedgecock sold his farm and carried the money in a shoe box under a seat, Craven using funds after buying two autos and other spending.

Mortgage Sale of West End Heights Lots in High Point

Mortgagee executors announce a cash sale at public auction on February 23, 1918, at noon in front of the Mercantile building on North Main Street High Point. The sale transfers Lots 14 and 15 in Block 3 West End Heights, as described in Guilford County Plat Book 3 page 2, near Pickett Cotton Mill. Proceeds satisfy the debt due under the June 5 1915 mortgage recorded in Book 279 page 404.
