Farmer’s $2400 Disappears and Boy Arrested

David Hedgecock of Route 4 Shady Grove sold his farm for 2400 dollars and rode toward Asheboro with his son and Jasper Craven to complete a deed. The shoe box with cash disappeared from Hedgecock’s car after Craven appeared anxious to return home. Craven was arrested near Teague with 1000 dollars, 50 dollars hidden in a barn, and two confiscated Fords. Hedgecock’s money remains short about 600 dollars. The accused Craven, son of Sanford Craven, awaits trial in Asheboro. moral warns banking checks.

Kearns Sets Local Hawk Catching Record

M. M. Kearns of Route 3 reports seven hawks and one owl caught over two months with a three foot wingspan hawk last week. He uses a high pole trap and is regarded as the region's champion hawk catcher.

January 30th is Tag Your Shovel Day encouraging one shovel of coal saved per day across the United States. Saving 15 million tons could warm five million people all winter and would heat 7.5 million soldiers or launch 25 battleships across the Atlantic 3,000 times. Confederate Veteran who Brought News of Lee Surrender

John P. McGinnis, a Confederate cavalry veteran from Charlotte, helped verify and relay the report of Lee's surrender to the city. He and a fellow soldier traveled south, endured worn horses, and reached Charlotte to confirm the historic news. McGinnis also recalled shoeing General Lee's horse Traveler, whose skeleton rests at Washington and Lee University.
