The Review’s last issue carried 2713 square inches of advertising or 1252 running inches over 216 inches wide, nearly 101 pages of paid ads. Throughout the month the paper carried about four fifths of that amount and around three fifths for the year, proving advertising pays. Boiled down to three words, there’s a reason. it will pay you to investigate.
Bradner’s big sale runs from Wednesday December 13 to Saturday night at B H Bradner & Co. 2500 shoppers visited opening day. B H Hoffman of American Special Sales & Salvage Co DC runs the event. Daily sales planned with hopes of deeper bargains as the week continues. Also note the death of the mother of Thornwell Haynes, city school superintendent. A new pipe organ is installed at the Lutheran Church.
A letter to editor from R. Alexander Conliff of High Point North Carolina commends The Review for its Christmas issue. He praises the weekly as superior to other South published papers and notes strong advertiser support and broad readership. He wishes continued business success.
In a lengthy appeal the Review asks readers with expiring or due subscriptions to pay what they can now and settle the balance later. It denounces “professional dead beats” who avoid payment, defends the editor’s hard lot, and urges continued support along with local ads and holiday offerings from merchants and services including Miss Venetia Smith and HA Moffitt. Postmaster Ragan’s copies for old soldiers are noted, as are fires and volunteers.
The Review invites contributions to the Empty Stocking Fund to aid underprivileged children. Miss Clara Cox will distribute and acknowledge gifts in the next paper. Early donors include D. H. Milton, Mrs. Jesse R. Leonard Beavans Stamey Co, Miss Etta Ireland, 5 Moffitt Furnishing Co, and Mr. J. C. Kellum, a former resident who died last week.
Saturday night the British Woolen Mills were entered for the second time in under two months. Several suits of clothes were taken and the thieves picked only items that fit their frames, leaving odd coats and pants behind. No bars or safeguards protected the windows, making it an easy entry. The Review received a calendar from Matton Drug Company titled Washington's Last Birthday, a mammoth art piece intended for offices with a limited run. Also noted were calendars for B F McClure grocer Virginia Life Insurance Norfolk and Western Railroad, all well produced with proper credit.
Wrightenberry-Morrison Co. installs a large electric sign in front of their shop, a sight that draws attention from passersby. The piece urges other merchants to consider electric signage, noting that most kinds of advertising pay.
Fire fought Sunday evening at twilight in the High Point Savings & Trust Co. office in the Elwood block. Origin traced to a back closet, cause unknown. Metal roofing helped limit damage to bank quarters, with water and smoke effects only. No major injuries reported.
Reverend G E Eaves tendered his resignation as pastor of the South Main Street M. E. church. He plans to travel for the present and pursue evangelistic work, intending to preach at various locations. No successor has been named.
Public Service Company advances streetcar expansion from Main and Commerce to Hamilton and Green Street beyond the silk mill. Four months to finish with a large workforce. Rails for another section and poles already ordered. Move praised by High Point officials.
