Patriotic Days Planned With Parades And Exhibits

A city plans a Civic Improvement program featuring a library book drive and service projects. Events include daily parades, speeches by state figures, and afternoon entertainments. Wednesday marks Patriots Day with Red Cross and veterans events, Thursday Farmers Day with livestock and canning exhibits, Friday Education Day with school displays, and Saturday Everybody's Day parade as the finale.

Bad Road Condition North of High Point Raises Safety Concerns

Road north of High Point badly needs repairs with dangerous holes near the Roper place and along the main road about three miles away. Drivers warn that if Guilford county does not fix it soon, damage and injuries may occur to horses and motorists.

In Superior Court last week a verdict favored A. B Horney guardian of Z A Burns against Carson Burns and others. The jury ruled Zimri Burns was of unsound mind when he made his will, so the estate is set aside and all children share equally.

Veterans Enjoy Open Air Meeting at Kirkman Home

Veterans of High Point Camp 1682 gathered at the home of Mr and Mrs J E Kirkman for an open air meeting on Saturday afternoon. A fine dinner was served and speeches followed. The editor missed the event due to a watermelon incident at dinner.

Auto accident injures elderly man near J Elwood Cox corner

Henry Meredith an aged citizen was seriously injured Saturday afternoon after Everett Hedrick’s car struck him near the J Elwood Cox corner. Hedrick, driving on East Green Street, and Hurley Davis on Hamilton, avoided collision until Hedrick accelerated to escape and hit Meredith. Meredith is hard of hearing, partly blamed for the incident. Mayor and Mrs. W P Ragan visited Moore’s Springs area last Sunday and stopped at Wade Meum Piedmont Springs and Walnut Cove.

High Point Township Certifies 124 for National Army

The Local Board certified 124 men for the National Army, thirty-five more than the requested 89, including 92 whites and 32 colored. Names list many residents such as Robt W Brackett John G Overby Geo Tucker Chas Cox Julius Peel and others. several were noted as already in the army or ineligible. A separate list notes those who did not present themselves for examination and thus were certified anyway.

Prof Claude Smith completed the school census showing 3 012 white children this year up 41 from 2 971 and 701 colored children up 30 from 671. Total school children this year 3 713 versus 3 645 last year.

Exemption Board Denies Six Claims for Exemption

The Exemption Board denied six exemption claims on Friday and Saturday. Named filers include Garrett W. Cage and his wife Jule Cook, Willie Walton and his mother, Charley Howerton and his wife, Robi S. Unkerwood and his wife, and Albert Wade Morris with aged and infirm parents. Officials report enough men secured to fill High Point's quota from the past week's examinations.

Doings of the City Council

At Tuesday's session the council discussed light and water rate changes and a city fair project. They considered electrifying the line to the pumping station at an estimated cost of 8 000 to 10 000 dollars to save coal and improve efficiency with a new pump badly needed.

Soldiers of Company M Receive New Uniform Equipment

Members of Company M received their new equipment yesterday. The batch includes two extra pants two shirts three suits of underwear four pairs of hose a hat two pairs of shoes one pair of loggins and bedding. Soldiers spent the day moving the gear to the armory and organizing it.
